If you do not believe that Genesis chapters 1 thru 11 are literally true, how can you possibly believe that John 3:16 is literally true?

1At dawn on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Miryam from Magdala went to the tomb, and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.[1] 2So she came running to ShimonSimon KefaPeter and to the other talmiddisciple, the one whom Yeshua loved,[2] and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put Him!”

3So Kefa and the other talmid went out, heading toward the tomb. 4They both ran together, but other talmid outran Kefa and reached the tomb first. 5He stooped down and saw the linen cloths lying there, but he didn’t go in. 6Shimon Kefa arrived just after him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there. 7The wrapping that had been on His head was folded up in a separate place from the other linen cloths.[7] 8So then the other talmid who had reached the tomb first also went in. And he saw and believed. 9For they still didn’t understand from the Scripture that He must rise from the dead. 10So the talmidimdisciples went away again to their own homes.

11But Miryam was standing outside at the tomb weeping. So as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb, 12and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Yeshua had lain.[12] 13They asked her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don’t know where they have laid Him.” 14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Yeshua standing, but she didn’t know that it was Yeshua.

15Yeshua said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?”

Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

16Yeshua said to her, “Miryam.”

She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (that is, “my Teacher”)[16]

17Yeshua said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I haven’t yet ascended to my Father;[17] but go to My brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’”

18Miryam from Magdala came and told the talmidim that she had seen the Lord, and that He had said these things to her. 19When it was evening that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were locked where the talmidim were assembled, for fear of the Judeans, Yeshua came and stood in the middle and said to them, “Shalom aleikhem!Peace be to you.”

20When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The talmidim were glad when they saw the Lord. 21So Yeshua said to them again, “Shalom aleikhem! As the Father has sent Me, even so I send you.” 22When He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive Ruach HaKodeshthe Holy Spirit! 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they have been forgiven them. If you retain anyone’s sins, they have been retained.”[23]

24But T’omaThomas, one of the twelve, called DidymusTwin, wasn’t with them when Yeshua came. 25So the other talmidim said to him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26After eight days, again his talmidim were inside and Thomas was with them. Yeshua came, the doors being locked, and stood in the middle, and said, “Shalom aleikhem!” 27Then he said to T’oma, “Reach here your finger, and see My hands. Reach here your hand, and put it into My side. Don’t be unbelieving, but believing.”

28T’oma answered Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29Yeshua said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

30Therefore Yeshua did many other signs in the presence of His talmidim, which are not written in this book; 31but these are written that you may believe that Yeshua is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

16. Miryam did not recognize Yeshua until she heard His voice. Will you recognize Him when you hear His voice? [BACK]

17. There are two possible reasons why Yeshua told Miryam to not cling to Him. One reason is that since He was going away, He didn’t want her to emotionally cling to Him after His ascension. The more likely reason, based on the context, is that He had just risen from the dead and had not yet ascended to the Heavenly Temple where He serves forever as the Great Cohen HaGadolHigh Priest. Under the conditions of Torah, a priest who has come into any physical contact with a woman is ritually “unclean” for a period of time. Yeshua needed to be ritually “clean” to enter into the Heavenly Temple, where He would be officially “ordained” as High Priest before returning to the Galilee to meet with His talmidim 40 days later. 23. This absolutely does not give the authority to any person, whether “clergy” or “laity,” to forgive the sin of another; that authority resides solely within the Judge of the Universe. It is related to the authority of the Sanhedrin to sit in judgment only in civil and criminal matters brought before the high court. It is my considered opinion that Yeshua removed that authority from the Sanhedrin and bestowed it upon the Apostles. That authority is passed down to the beit din of the local assembly to rule on matters solely within that assembly and as specified in Matthew 18:15-17. (That is only my opinion; feel free to disagree.) See the notes on Matthew 16:19 and 18:18. [BACK]
