6. Holiness Required of Priests (21:1–22:33)
a. Requirements for Priests (21:1–22:16)
i. Behavioral Requirements (21:1–15)
(i) 1 ADONAI said to Moshe, “Speak to the sons of Aharon, the cohenimpriests, and tell them, ‘A cohenpriest must not defile himself for a dead person among his people, 2 except for his immediate family: his mother, father, son, daughter, brother, 3 or for his unmarried[3] sister who is near to him, since she has had no husband. 4 He must not defile himself for those related to him by marriage and so profane himself.
5 “‘Cohenim must not shave bakd spots on their heads, shave off the corners of their beards, or make cuts in their bodies. 6 They must be holy[6a] to their God and not profane the name[6b] of their God, for they present the offerings made by fire to ADONAI, the food[6c] of their God. Therefore they must be holy.
7 “‘They must not marry a woman defiled by prostitution or divorced by her husband; for the cohen is holy to his God. 8 You are to regard him as holy since for he presents the food of your God. He must be holy to you because I, ADONAI, Who sets you apart,[8] am holy.
9 “‘If a cohen’s daughter defiles herself by prostituting herself, she profanes her father; she must be burned in the fire.
10 “‘The cohen who is the highest among his brothers, who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and has been ordained to wear on the priestly garments, must not dishevel his hair or tear his clothes. 11 He must not go near any dead body or make himself unclean, even for his father or for his mother. 12 He must not leave or desecrate the sanctuary of his God, for the conseration of the anointing oil of his God is on him. I am ADONAI.
13 “‘The woman he marries must be a virgin. 14 He is not to marry a widow, a divorced woman, or one defilled by prestitution. He is to marry a virgin from his own people 15 so that he does not defile his offspring among his people, for I am ADONAI Who sanctifies him.’”
ii. Physical Requirements (21:16–24)
(ii) 16 Then ADONAI also told Moshe, 17 “Tell Aharon, ‘For the generations to come, none of your descendants who has a physical defect may approach to offer the food of his God. 18 No man who has any defect may approach — no man who is blind, lame, disfigured, or deformed; 19 no man who has a broken or hand, 20 or who is hunchbacked, or a dwarf, or who has an eye defect, a festering rash, scabs, or a crushed testicle. 21 No descendant of Aharon the cohen who has a defect may approach to present the offerings made by fire to ADONAI. Since he has a defect, he must not come near to offer the food of his God. 22 He may eat the most holy food of his God as well as the holy food, 23 but because he has a defect, he must not come near the curtain or approach the altar, soas not to desecrate My sanctuaries. For I am ADONAI Who sanctifies them.’”
24 Moshe told this to Aharon and his sons, and to all the people of Isra'el.
3. Hebrew בּתוּלָה (beth-oo-law'), a virgin. How interesting that the Hebrew word for “unmarried” is the same as “virgin.” Unmarried virginity is simply assumed in ancient Israel! [BACK]
6a. Hebrew קָדוֹשׁ (kaw-doshe') set apart for a specific purpose. [BACK]
6b. Hebrew שֵׁם (shem), name, fame, renoun, reputation. [BACK]
6c. Clearly this is metaphor; HaShem has no need of sustenance. [BACK]
8. or, Who makes you holy [BACK]
