This selection from the Book of Genesis chronicles the final major transitions in the life of the patriarch Abraham, beginning with the death of his wife Sarah at age 127. Following her passing, Abraham secures a permanent family legacy in the land of Canaan by purchasing a burial cave in Hebron from the local Hittites. To ensure the continuity of his lineage, he sends his most trusted servant back to his ancestral homeland to find a suitable wife for his son Isaac. Through divine guidance, the servant encounters Rebekah, who agrees to return with him and eventually marries Isaac, providing him comfort after his mother’s death. The narrative concludes by detailing Abraham’s final years, his second marriage, and his eventual burial alongside Sarah, while also recording the expansive genealogies of his descendants through Ishmael.
