The Babylonian Taproot
and the
Counterfeit Theology of Rome

Summary

The material in this section outlines a comprehensive theological and historical thesis known as the “Babylon Mystery Religion,” the religious system that with began with Nimrod. The central premise posits that modern religious confusion and many Christian traditions are not derived from biblical mandates but are rooted in a systemic rebellion that began in the post-Flood plains of Shinar. [MAP] This “Babylonian Taproot” is characterized by a “Counterfeit Principle,” where true biblical prophecies—specifically the Protoevangelium of Genesis 3:15—were strategically distorted into a pagan Mother-Child cult centered on the figures of Nimrod, Semiramis, and Tammuz.

The analysis identifies a critical historical pivot in the 4th century under Emperor Constantine. Through a policy of Interpretatio Christiana,[1] the Roman state synthesized these ancient Babylonian motifs with the nascent Messianic faith, rebranding pagan deities, festivals, and titles to unify the empire. This process effectively severed the faith from its Torah-based Jewish roots. Consequently, in this section we advocate for a “Theology of the Remnant,” following the historical precedent of the Netzarim (Nazarenes) and various Sabbatarian dissenters. This remnant is called to an “Exodus from Babylon,” realigning their lives with the biblical calendar, dietary laws (Kashrut), and the “ancient paths” of the Torah.

I. The Shinar Source: Origins of the Mystery Religion

The roots of global religious syncretism are traced back to the historical and biblical figure of Nimrod and the linguistic event at the Tower of Babel.

Nimrod: The Prototype of the Anti-Messiah

 • The Nature of Rebellion: Genesis 10:9 describes Nimrod as “a mighty hunter before (panim) ADONAI.” The Hebrew term panim (“before” or “in the face of”) suggests he was a hunter of men’s souls in open defiance of the Creator.

 • Historical Parallels:

¤ Sargon of Akkad (c. 2334–2279 BCE): The name “Nimrod” doesn’t appear in any known ancient Near Eastern king lists or inscriptions. Archaeological records identify “Sargon” as the first ruler to unite disparate city-states into a single empire—the first “one-world government,” and who shifted religious focus from local deities to the imperial state. These are activities that the Bible assigns to Nimrod, so we are probably safe in the assumption that Sargon and Nimrod were the same person.

¤ Enmerkar: The Sumerian king of Uruk is featured in the epic Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta, which provides an extra-biblical witness to a time when all people spoke one language before the gods confused their speech.

 • The Tower of Babel: The tower functioned as both a political symbol of autonomy and an astronomical observatory for zodiacal worship and astrology.

The Mother-Child Archetype

 • Semiramis and the Counterfeit Seed: Following Nimrod’s death, his wife/mother Semiramis claimed her son, Tammuz, was the miraculous fulfillment of the “Seed of the Woman” promised in Genesis 3:15. This established a Mother-Child cult that served as a “Satanic counterfeit” to the true Messiah.

 • Mythological Layering: While the historical Queen Shammuramat (9th century BCE) lived later, her prominence led Greek historians to mythologize her, blending her story with older mother-goddess legends.

 • Archaeological Evidence: “Astarte plaques”—small clay figurines of a mother holding a child—found in Israelite strata during the monarchy period demonstrate the persistence of this cult, which was condemned by the prophet Jeremiah.

II. The Counterfeit Principle

The “Babylon Mystery Religion” is not viewed as a completely new religion but as a strategic distortion of true prophecy.

Authentic Narrative (Biblical) Counterfeit Narrative (Babylonian)
Protoevangelium: The “Seed of the Woman” will crush the serpent (Gen 3:15). Tammuz/Semiramis: A false fulfillment through a claimed miraculous birth and resurrection.
Redemption through Sacrifice: Focus on the sacrificial mission of the Messiah. Power through Intercession: Focus on the “Queen of Heaven” as a mediator.
Torah-Observant: The Messiah (Yeshua) upholds the Father’s instructions. Lawless: The counterfeit savior often does away with biblical boundaries and laws.
III. The Roman Synthesis: Interpretatio Christiana

In the 4th century, the Roman Empire adopted a policy of rebranding pagan infrastructure to unify a fractured populace.

Constantine’s Rebranding

Emperor Constantine did not dismantle the Roman version of the Babylon Mystery Religion over which he functioned as high priest; he rebranded it using biblical terminology. The “smoking gun” for this deliberate severance is found in Constantine’s letter to the bishops after the Council of Nicaea (CE 325):

“It appeared an unworthy thing that in the celebration of this most holy feast [Passover/Easter] we should follow the practice of the Jews … let us then have nothing in common with the detestable Jewish crowd.”

Rebranding the Pantheon and Time

 • Deities and Offices:

¤ The “Queen of Heaven” (Ishtar/Diana) became Mary (Theotokos).

¤ The statue of Jupiter was repurposed or renamed Peter.

¤ The “circle” of sun-priests became the College of Cardinals.

¤ The title Pontifex Maximus (High Priest of the Roman Cult) was eventually appropriated by the Bishop of Rome.

 • Calendrical Shifts:

¤ Sabbath to Sun-day: Worship moved from the seventh day to the day honoring the solar deity.

¤ Passover to Easter: The biblical Passover was replaced by the Feast of Ishtar (Easter).

¤ Sukkot to Christmas: The Messiah’s birth (traditionally linked to Sukkot) was moved to December 25th to align with Saturnalia and the rebirth of the sun-god (Sol Invictus).

IV. The History of the Remnant

Despite imperial and religious pressure, a thread of Torah-observant believers persisted throughout history.

The Netzarim (Nazarenes)

These were the original followers of Yeshua who did not view their faith as a new religion but as the restoration of Israel. They found themselves in a “pincer movement”:

 1. Rabbinic Judaism: Hardened its stance against them as sectarians.

 2. Roman State Church: Criminalized them for “Judaizing” and refusing to adopt the paganized calendar.

The Trail of Sabbatarian Dissenters

Historical groups preserved the “ancient paths” in the shadows of the State Church:

 • Quartodecimans: Believers who insisted on celebrating Messiah’s death on the 14th of Nisan (biblical Passover) rather than a Roman-mandated Sunday.

 • The Passagii (12th-13th Century): Itinerant believers in Italy and France who upheld the Law of Moses, circumcision, and the seventh-day Sabbath.

 • Transylvanian Sabbatarians (1500s): A robust movement led by figures like Andreas Eőssi who developed a full Messianic liturgy and kept biblical dietary laws.

 • Ethiopian Tewahedo: Maintained Torah rhythms and Sabbath observance in the periphery of the Roman Empire.

V. Practical Theology of the Counter-Sign

The “Exodus from Babylon” is described as a mental, liturgical, and physical process of sanctification.

 • Reclaiming Sacred Time (Shabbat): Reinstating the seventh-day Sabbath as a temporal sanctuary and a declaration of independence from the imperial economy.

 • The Redemptive Clock (Moedim): Replacing the Gregorian/Pagan calendar with the “Appointed Times” of Leviticus 23 (Passover, Sukkot, etc.), which serve as a prophetic map of the Messiah’s mission.

 • The Discipline of Distinction (Kashrut): Observing biblical dietary laws as a constant physical reminder of set-apartness (Kadosh).

 • The Beit Midrash Model: Moving away from top-down “Mystery” hierarchies to decentralized study where the Torah is accessible to all.

 • The Family Cell: Returning the center of spiritual life to the family table rather than a solely professional religious institution.[2]

VI. Conclusion: The Final Restoration

The information in this section will lead to the conclusion that the return to the “Ancient Paths” (Jeremiah 6:16) is a prerequisite for escaping the judgments prophesied for Babylon in Revelation 18:4. By deconstructing Babylonian terminology and syncretistic traditions, the “Remnant” prepares for the final “Restoration of All Things,” aligning with the original Edenic-Torah standard upon the return of the King.

  1. Interpretatio Christiana (Latin for Christian interpretation, also Christian reinterpretation) is adaptation of non-Christian elements of culture or historical facts to the worldview of Christianity. The term is commonly applied to recasting of religious and cultural activities, beliefs and imageries of pagan peoples into a Christianized form as a strategy for Christianization. From a Judeo-Christian perspective, “pagan” refers to the various religious beliefs and practices of those who adhered to non-Abrahamic faiths, including within the Greco-Roman world the traditional public and domestic religion of ancient Rome, imperial cult, Hellenistic religion, Cult of Dionysus, the ancient Egyptian religion, Celtic and Germanic polytheism, initiation religions such as the Eleusinian Mysteries and Mithraism, the religions of the ancient Near East, and the Zoroastrianism.

Reformatting traditional religious and cultural activities and beliefs into a “Christianized” form was officially sanctioned; preserved in the Venerable Bede’s Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum is a letter from Pope Gregory I to Mellitus, arguing that “conversions” were easier if people were allowed to retain the outward forms of their traditions while changing the object of their veneration to God, “to the end that, whilst some gratifications are outwardly permitted them, they may the more easily consent to the inward consolations of the grace of God۔” [Source: wikiwand.com/en/articles/Interpretatio_Christiana, accessed 6 Feb. 2026] [BACK]

 2. This is not in any way to suggest a move away from corporate worship, but rather a return to the observation of the Moamim, God’s Designated Times, in ceremonial practices within the home in addition to corporate worship that follows the Moadim. [BACK]
