Who/What is “Israel”?

Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words. 2It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. 4They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” 5The Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. 7Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” 8So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city. 9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth. (Gen. 11:1-9 NASB95)

Prior to the Babel Rebellion,[5] all the people of the earth “spoke the same language, used the same words” (Gen 11:1). Clearly everyone on earth was a direct descendant of Adam and Eve, so it seems obvious (to me) that everyone would have spoken the same language that God taught Adam and Eve in Eden. I believe that this universal language is the same language that is spoken by those who dwell in the unseen realm, the language that we now call “Hebrew.” As a result of the Babel Rebellion, God confounded the language of the people, causing them to break up into groups who spoke the same language. In Jewish thought there is Israel, and there are 70 nations that are not-Israel, or Gentiles.

In the “Divine Council” worldview, God appointed one “Watcher” (Dan. 4:13, 17, 23) — ben Elohim — over each of the 70 Gentile nations (Deut. 32:8),[6] but He retained for Himself (Deut 32:9) the people who still spoke the original language, and from whom He would call out a man named Avram to create the people who would bear the name of Avram’s grandson Ya'akov, whom He would come to rename “Israel.”

So the question we are addressing today is “Who or What is Israel?” Is Israel the political entity which bears that name? Is it the government of the modern State of Israel? Is the “the Church” now the true Israel as many Christians believe? Let’s turn to Rabbi Jonathan Cahn for that discussion.

The Truth About the Jews & Tucker Carlson[7]
Jonathan Cahn Prophetic

ARE THE JEWS THE JEWS! – Are they the same people as in the Bible – or a different people? Is the Abrahamic Covenant still in effect and with regard to Israel? Is Israel the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy? Has God replaced the Jewish people and what does all this have to do with Tucker Carlson? Jonathan Cahn shares in this prophetic message.

Media Disclaimer: Presence of video or audio recordings on this website does not
necessarily indicate agreement with all (or any) of the speaker’s theological position.

Rabbi Cahn’s discussion clearly explains that the terms “the Jewish people” and “Israel” can be used interchangeably. “Jewish” is a religion, but it is more than a religion. Modern rabbinic Judaism claims that “a Jew is one whose mother is Jewish and who has not converted to another religion.” This is clearly a hypocritical claim since a “Jew” can be a practicing Buddhist, Shinto, or Hindu, or even an atheist and still be a Jew in the eyes of rabbinic Judaism. Only if a Jew embraces the Jewish Messiah Yeshua is that person considered to have “converted to another religion.”

“Jewish” can also refer to the ethnicity of all those who are descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob whether through either the maternal or paternal line. Regardless of the claims of modern rabbinic Judaism, DNA is DNA, period! So clearly a person can be ethnically Jewish without being legally Jewish.

“Israel” is used throughout the Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments, to refer both to the political entity (kingdom or government) in place at the time as well as referring to the people of that nation. Centuries before Saul was anointed as the first king of Israel, creating the original nation of Israel, the people who were the descendants of the man Jacob/Israel were called Israel (or “the sons of Israel” or “the sons of Jacob.” Thus “Israel” is used to refer to the “political” entity of the Jewish people or to the Jewish people as a whole.

God’s Purpose for Israel [TO TOP] This section is being written

God’s purpose for Israel is that they should be “a kingdom of kohanim [priests] for Me, a nation set apart” (Exodus 19:5-6). The responsibilities of a priest are to be a representative of God to the people and a representative of the People to God. It was through Israel that God introduced monotheism to the world. It was through Israel that God introduced his standard of righteousness (Torah) to the world. It was through Israel that God introduced the concept of “salvation” to the world. It was Israel who provided a written record of God’s words and deeds (the Bible) to the world. In fact, the entire Bible is the record of God's dealings one one man, Abraham, his ancestors, and his descendants. It was through Israel that God brought His Messiah/Redeemer into the world. And it will be through Israel that God rules over His entire creation throughout the Messianic Kingdom Age and in the Olam Habah (the World to Come). Anyone who claims to love God and yet holds His set-apart people in disdain is a liar, and there is no truth in him. To hate Israel is to hate Israel’s Messiah and to hate the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

“When God wants to discipline the Jewish people, he does it through the Gentiles. And when God wants to bless the Gentiles, he does it through the Jewish people.”

The Bible teaches that Israel has been elected by HaShem out of all of the families of man to be His chosen people, to serve as an example to the world of His love, compassion, providence, and righteous judgment, and to lead all the nations (goyim) into faith in HaShem. Moreover, HaShem chose Avraham and his descendants to be the human family from which His own Son, Adonai Yeshua HaMashiach, would be born after the flesh, to be Israel’s Messiah and the Redeemer of all who would come to Him.

The Bride of ADONAI [TO TOP] This section is being written

First of all, I need to say unequivocally that “The Church” is absolutely, positively not “the Bride of Christ”! Individuals who are “members” of “the Church” may be adopted into the Commonwealth of Israel and become part of “the Bride” through saving faith in the King of Israel (Romans 11:17-24), but “the Church” has cut herself corporately off from Israel, rejected God’s covenant of marriage (the Torah), denied everything that once tied her to Israel, and has thus cut herself off from “the Bride.” However, individuals who identify with the Messiah, the Land, the People, the Covenants, and the Torah of Israel are most certainly citizens of the Commonwealth of Israel.

Human marriage is the picture that God has given us to depict the relation of Himself to Israel and the entire book called “Song of Songs” or “Song of Solomon” is all about that relationship. God is not a polygamist. Yeshua is God (יְהוָֹה, YHVH, yud-heh-vav-heh, Yehovah), the great I AM, and He has only one Bride, Israel! The events recorded in Exodus surrounding the giving of the Torah was the official “wedding” of Israel to HaShem.

The Sinai event, also known as the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, should be understood as the marriage ceremony between God and the Jewish people. According to this metaphor, the Torah is the ketubah (marriage contract), the Ten Commandments are the vows, and the cloud over the mountain is the chuppah (wedding canopy).[1],[2]

Some Jewish traditions and rituals reflect this symbolic relationship, such as the breaking of the glass at the end of a wedding ceremony, which is a reminder of the shattered tablets of the covenant that Moses broke when he saw the people worshipping the golden calf.[3] Another example is the custom of reading the Song of Songs, a poetic expression of love between God and Israel, on the holiday of Passover, which commemorates the exodus from Egypt and the journey to Sinai.[3]

The Sinai event is considered to be a pivotal moment in Jewish history and theology, as it marks the establishment of a covenantal bond between God and His chosen people. The Jewish people are expected to uphold their part of the agreement by following God’s mitzvot (commandments and teachings), while God promises to protect and bless them. The Sinai event is also seen as a model for the future redemption, when God will renew His relationship with Israel and all of humanity in a more intimate and glorious way.[3]

Numerous passages in the Tanakh reflect the Bride relationship of Israel to God. Here are but a few.

I will rejoice greatly in the LORD,

My soul will be joyful in my God;

For He has clothed me with garments of salvation,

He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness,

As a groom puts on a turban,

And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. (Isaiah 61:10, NAS)

For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,

And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep quiet,

Until her righteousness goes forth like brightness,

And her salvation like a torch that is burning.

2 The nations will see your righteousness,

And all kings your glory;

And you will be called by a new name

Which the mouth of the LORD will designate.

3 You will also be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD,

And a royal headband in the hand of your God.

4 It will no longer be said to you, “Forsaken,”

Nor to your land will it any longer be said, “Desolate”;

But you will be called, “My delight is in her,”

And your land, “Married”;

For the LORD delights in you,

And to Him your land will be married.

5 For as a young man marries a virgin,

So your sons will marry you;

And as the groom rejoices over the bride,

So your God will rejoice over you. (Isaiah 62:1-5, NAS, emphasis added)

“Go and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, ‘This is what the LORD says: “I remember regarding you the devotion of your youth, Your love when you were a bride, Your following after Me in the wilderness, Through a land not sown. (Jeremiah 2:2, NAS)

Numerous times HaShem calls out Israel for committing adultery against Him. That is possible only of Israel is His bride. And yet He repeatedly restores her as His bride.

8And I saw that for all the adulteries of faithless Israel, I had sent her away and given her a certificate of divorce, yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear; but she went and prostituted herself also. 9And because of the thoughtlessness of her prostitution, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and trees. 10Yet in spite of all this her treacherous sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but rather in deception,” declares the LORD. (Jeremiah 3:8-10, NAS)

“Why should I forgive you? Your sons have forsaken Me And sworn by those who are not gods. When I had fed them to the full, They committed adultery And stayed at the prostitute’s house. (Jeremiah 5:7, NAS)

For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. So they have committed adultery with their idols, and even made their sons, whom they bore to Me, pass through the fire to them as food. (Ezekiel 23:37, NAS)

The entire book of Hosea is a parable for God’s ultimate redemption of Israel as His Bride.

We also see this relationship presented in the Revelation.

Now a great sign was seen in heaven — a woman clothed with the sun, under her feet the moon, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. (Revelation 12:1)

For sake of discussion, assume with me that the “woman” described in Revelation 12:1 is Israel. As God’s Bride, she is clothed in glory (the sun) and the moon under her feet means that she “stands” on her “foundation,” the “moons” that are God’s Appointed Times, the Moadim, the “signs and seasons” (Genesis 1:14) which are determined by the moon, as God directed (Exodus 12:2-6, 18; 13:5; Leviticus 16:29; 23:5-6; 23:24-27, 32-34, 39-41; 25:9, etc.)

Crowns are a sign of authority. Her authority comes from the twelve patriarchs through whom God made his eternal covenants with Israel. She labors (struggles) to give birth. Not only does Messiah come from her (not just once, but twice), she also gave the world monotheism and the only revelation of the only true God. For that, and for her exalted position as God’s Bride, she has been under constant persecution since before she even became a nation, since Abraham first took his family to Egypt.

The People [TO TOP]

The Bible teaches that, although many individual Israelites (many “myriads” — as much a third of the population, including many of the kohenim) immediately received the Good News of Mashiach and became His talmidim, corporate Israel (that is, the political leaders of Israel, not the Jewish people) fell from her exalted position among the nations of the world because of her repeated idolatry and her corporate rejection of Mashiach when He first appeared. Therefore, HaShem allowed the destruction of the Temple and the dispersion of political Israel throughout the nations of the world, and allowed Eretz Yisra'el (the Land of Israel) to be overrun by the Gentile nations (the Goyim) for a period of time known as “the time of the Goyim.” This was a temporary exile from which HaShem promised to call forth His people at the end “the time of the Goyim.” The establishment of the modern State of  Israel in 1948 marked the end “the time of the Goyim,” and He is now returning His People to their Land, from which they will never again be exiled.

The Covenants [TO TOP]

The Bible teaches that HaShem has made numerous unilateral, unconditional, and eternally irrevocable covenants with the household of Abraham, many of which have not yet been fulfilled, and that because of His unchangeable nature He is faithful to fulfill all His promises. It should therefore be accepted as self-evident that HaShem is not yet finished with His chosen race. They will again live corporately in fellowship with and obedience to Him, and in peace and safety within the geographical boundaries of their ancestral home, Eretz Yisra'el, under the Kingship of His Messiah Yeshua. I specifically and categorically reject as heretical the dogma known as “Replacement Theology” which teaches that “the Church” has replaced Israel in HaShem’s plan, and that Israel has been temporarily “set aside” in favor of the Gentiles. [More HERE.]

The Land [TO TOP]

The Bible teaches that HaShem owns all the land of the world, and that kings, potentates, and nations occupy that land only with HaShem’s permission, and that He gives and revokes that permission according to His sovereign will. The Bible teaches that HaShem explicitly gave to Avraham, Yitz’chak, Ya'akov, and to all their descendants forever an irrevocable land grand of all the territory from “the river of Egypt” (the Nile River) to the Euphrates River, and that land was then, as it is now, Israel’s irrevocable possession.

Occupied Territories

ISRAEL AS GIVEN TO ABRAHAM, ISAAC, AND JACOB

    1. Israel’s territory currently occupied by Lebanon
    2. Israel’s territory currently occupied by Syria
    3. Israel’s territory currently occupied by Iraq
    4. Israel’s territory currently occupied by Kuwait
    5. Israel’s territory currently occupied by Saudi Arabia
    6. Israel’s territory currently occupied by Jordan
    7. Israel’s territory currently occupied by Egypt

It is therefore obvious that almost of all of Eretz Yisra'el is being illegally occupied by the nations of Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. (Click here for more details.)

The dark black border indicates the territory that HaShem gave as a land grant to Avraham, Yitz’chak, and Ya'akov, and to their descendants forever as an everlasting covenant. It also marks the territory that the United States and the United Nations are trying to steal from Israel and give to the Muslims. HaShem says that He will not permit this, and that he will “curse” anyone who tries to make it happen. If implemented, America’s “Road Map for Peace” may very well cause the downfall and destruction of the United States of America as we now know it.

What is the Role of the Land of Israel in Eschatology?
Dr. Michael Heiser

The people of Israel could keep the land if they were loyal to the covenant.
But we know by the Exile that they lost the land. The big eschatological question
is whether the promises are still in place, and that is crucial to interpreting correctly
the New Testament when it comes to eschatology. Check this out!

The “Palestinian” Conflict [TO TOP]

As Israel owns all the land from the Nile to the Euphrates, anyone besides Israel who lives on any part of that land without their permission is an illegal occupying force, and God has given Israel both the right and the responsibility to drive them out.

I will drive them out from before you gradually, until you have grown in number and can take possession of the land. I will set your boundaries from the Sea of Suf [Red Sea] to the sea of the P'lishtimPhilistines [Mediterranian] and from the [Sahara] desert to the [Euphrates] River, for I will hand the inhabitants of the land over to you, and you will drive them out from before you. You are not to make a covenant with them or with their gods. They are not to live in your land; otherwise they will make you sin against me by ensnaring you to serve their gods. [Allah?] (Exodus 23:30-33)

Any nation who resists Israel in their God-given responsibility of governing all of their land is not resisting Israel, but rather they are resisting the God of Israel!

Now ADONAI said to Avram, “Get yourself out of your country, away from your kinsmen and away from your father's house, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, I will bless you, and I will make your name great; and you are to be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, but I will curse anyone who curses you; and by you all the families of the earth will be blessed." (Genesis 12:1-3)

How lovely are your tents, Ya'akov; your encampments, Isra'el! They spread out like valleys, like gardens by the riverside, like succulent aloes planted by ADONAI, like cedar trees next to the water. Water will flow from their branches, their seed will have water aplenty. Their king will be higher than Agag and his kingdom lifted high. God, who brought them out of Egypt, gives them the strength of a wild ox. They will devour the nations opposing them, break their bones, pierce them with their arrows. When they lie down they crouch like a lion, or like a lioness — who dares to rouse it? Blessed be all who bless you! Cursed be all who curse you! (Numbers 24:5-9)

I believe that most of the natural disasters and calamities that have occurred in the United States over the past two decades (especially) have been the direct result of America’s actions against the sovereign State of Israel and against the God of Israel. That’s right. I said that America is corporately acting against the God of Israel. I believe that HaShem repays “measure for measure” (Exodus 21:24; Leviticus 24:20; Deuteronomy 19:21; Matthew 7:2; Luke 6:38). When America forces Israeli citizens off their land and into refugee camps, (by forcing Israel to surrender “land for peace”) HaShem sends hurricanes to America to force American citizens off their land and into refugee camps. Measure for measure!

In addition to America’s elected officials applying pressure on Israel to negotiate with the self-called “Palestinians” (against the clear command of Torah), the apostate “Church” is corporately acting against the God of Israel by participating in the Palestinian-led “Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions” (BDS) movement. As of April 2019 the following American denominations are officially boycotting Israel, thus aligning themselves with the so called “Palestinians” and against the God of Israel: the Alliance of Baptists, Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Mennonite Church USA, Presbyterian Church (USA), Roman Catholic Church, Unitarian Universalist Association, United Church of Christ, United Methodist Church, World Communion of Reformed Churches, the World Council of Churches Central Committee. The Return of Messiah [TO TOP]

The Bible teaches that the world will experience seven years of strife and tribulation known as “Ya'akov’s Trouble” and that the return of Yeshua HaMashiach will be related to that strife. However, I am not personally convinced that Scripture clearly indicates whether His return will be before, during, or after that period.

The Bible teaches the literal and physical return of Adonai Yeshua HaMashiach to the earth just as He went, in Person and in the body in which He was crucified, now glorified, coming on the clouds of heaven, with all His Saints, and with power and great glory to establish His earthly Kingdom, to bind HaSatan and place him in the abyss, to lift the curse which now rests on the whole creation, to restore a united Israel to her own land and to give her the realization of every single element and every single provision of HaShem’s covenant promises, to bring the whole world to the personal knowledge of HaShem, and to personally and bodily reign over the whole earth for a thousand years from His throne in Jerusalem.

When Messiah returns to rule from His throne in Jerusalem, Israel will resume her rightful place as an example of righteousness and a “light to the Goyim.”

ADONAI-Tzva'ot says, “When that time comes, ten men — speaking all the languages of the nations — will grab hold of the cloak [literally, take hold of the tzitziot (fringes) of the tallit (prayer shawl)] of a Jew and say, ‘We want to go with you, because we have heard that God is with you.’” (Zechariah 8:23)

Additionally, when Mashiach returns to establish His earthly kingdom, all nations of the earth will be judged by the way they have treated Israel (Matthew 25:31-46):

“… The King will say to them, ‘Yes! I tell you that whenever you did these things for one of the least important of these brothers of mine [the Jewish people], you did them for me!…’”

Both the Temple and the Aharonic Priesthood will be completely restored, that the sacrifices will be practiced as a memorial reminder that our redemption has come only through the shed Blood of the Lamb, and that all the nations of the world will come to the Temple in Jerusalem to observe the Feasts of HaShem (particularly Sukkot, which is Yeshua’s “birthday party”) under the tutelage of their teacher Israel. Further, I specifically believe that the advent of “Messianic Judaism,” which coincided with Israel’s liberation of Jerusalem in the Six-Day War in 1967, is the beginning of the process of the goyim placing themselves under that tutelage.

I believe that King David, resurrected and glorified, will reign over Israel as Mashiach’s co-regent, and that Father Avraham, resurrected and glorified, will rule over all Eretz Yisra'el from the Nile River in the west to the Euphrates River in the east.

Israel and the “Jesus” of “the Church” [TO TOP]

To be broken off from the “Olive Tree” requires the rational act of unbelief. The natural branches who have not known or heard of the true Messiah of Israel are not “broken off.” Most Jewish people today have not yet heard the truth about their Jewish Messiah Yeshua.[4]

Rejection of a “Gentile Christian Jesus” — who came to destroy HaShem’s Torah and who rejects his own Jewishness, who is at best only a crude and extremely inaccurate caricature of the historical Yeshua HaMashiach — is NOT a rejection of the true Messiah of Israel.

Therefore, many Jewish people who “call on the name of ADONAI” (Joel 2:32; quoted in Romans 10:13) remain in the covenant promises, even though they may be partially blinded to the truth of Messiah. Gentile Believers who do not realize this fact are themselves are partially blinded. Once the fullness of the Gentiles has come into Israel the blindness on all parts will be lifted, then all of Israel, Jews and non-Jews, will be saved together by the Deliverer, Yeshua HaMashiach. It is He Who has turned away unrighteousness from Israel. The truly righteous ones, both Jewish and non-Jewish, must accept their covenant place in Israel, given through Yeshua HaMashiach.

If ADONAI is echad (one), (Deuteronomy 6:4), and if Yeshua and Abba are echad (John 10:30), and if “every tongue will confess that Yeshua HaMashiach is ADONAI, to the glory of HaSham the Father” (Philippians 2:11), then it follows that Yeshua HaMashiach is ADONAI. If Yeshua HaMashiach is ADONAI, then Yeshua HaMashiach appeared to Avraham at Mamre (Genesis 18); Yeshua HaMashiach made the covenant with Avraham (Genesis 15); Yeshua HaMashiach spoke to Moshe from the burning bush (Exodus 3); Yeshua HaMashiach wrote the Torah in stone with His finger (Exodus 24:12; 31:18).

And it is Yeshua HaMashiach Who today stands behind the Western Wall in Jerusalem and hears the prayers and receives the worship of His people Israel, who cannot see Him in the grossly distorted “Jesus” created by the Gentile “Church.”

For thus is is written:

• “Whoever calls on the name of ADONAI will be saved” (Joel 2:32; quoted in Romans 10:13)

• “He who believes in it [Him, the cornerstone of Zion] will not be disturbed.” (Isaiah 28:16; quoted in Romans 10:11)

 4. The “Jesus” of “the Church” is a “different Yeshua” and the “Gospel” of “the Church” is a “different Gospel” the than the Yeshua HaMashiach and the Gospel that are presented in the Bible. The “Church” has much for which it must answer to HaShem.

“For if someone comes and tells you about some other Yeshua than the one we told you about, or if you receive a spirit different from the one you received or accept some so-called ‘good news’ different from the Good News you already accepted, you bear with him well enough!” (2Cor. 11:4)

I am astounded that you are so quick to remove yourselves from me, the one who called you by the Messiah's grace, and turn to some other supposedly “Good News,” which is not good news at all! What is really happening is that certain people are pestering you and trying to pervert the genuine Good News of the Messiah. But even if we — or, for that matter, an angel from heaven! — were to announce to you some so-called “Good News” contrary to the Good News we did announce to you, let him be under a curse forever! We said it before, and I say it again: if anyone announces “Good News” contrary to what you received, let him be under a curse forever! (Galatians 1:6-9)
