Haftarah Sh'mot is Yesha‘yahu (Isaiah) 27:6–28:13; 29:22–23 (A)
Listen to it read from the Complete Jewish Bible
also Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 1:1–2:3 (S)

(A) Yesha‘yahu (Isaiah)

27: 6 In days to come, Ya'akov will take root. Isra'el will blossom and bud. They will fill the surface of the world with fruit. 7 Has He struck them as He struck those who struck them? Or are they killed like those who killed them were killed? 8 In measure, when you send them away, you contend with them. He has removed them with his rough blast in the day of the east wind. 9 Therefore by this the iniquity of Ya'akov will be forgiven, and this is all the fruit of taking away his sin: that he makes all the stones of the altar as chalk stones that are beaten in pieces, so that the Asherah poles[GN] and the incense altars shall rise no more. 10 For the fortified city is solitary, a habitation deserted and forsaken, like the wilderness. The calf will feed there, and there he will lie down, and consume its branches. 11 When its boughs are withered, they will be broken off. The women will come and set them on fire, for they are a people of no understanding. Therefore He Who made them will not have compassion on them, and He Who formed them will show them no favor.

12 It will happen in that day that ADONAI will thresh from the flowing stream of the Euphrates to the vadi of Egypt; and you will be gathered one by one, children of Isra'el.

13 It will happen in that day that a great shofar will be blown; and those who were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and those who were outcasts in the land of Egypt, shall come; and they will worship ADONAI in the holy mountain at YerushalayimJerusalem.

28: 1 Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of EfrayimEphraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley of those who are overcome with wine! 2 Hinneh,[GN] ADONAI has one who is mighty and strong. Like a storm of hail, a destroying storm, and like a storm of mighty waters overflowing, He will cast them down to the earth with his hand. 3 The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim will be trodden under foot. 4 The fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley, shall be like the first-ripe fig before the summer, which someone picks and eats as soon as he sees it. 5 In that day, ADONAI-Tzva’otof Hosts or of Armies will become a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty to the residue of his people, 6 and a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, and strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.

7 They also reel with wine, and stagger with strong drink. The cohenpriest and the prophet reel with strong drink. They are swallowed up by wine. They stagger with strong drink. They err in vision. They stumble in judgment. 8 For all tables are completely full of filthy vomit and filthiness.

9 Whom will He teach knowledge? To whom will He explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts? 10 For it is precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little.

11 But He will speak to this nation with stammering lips and in another language, 12 to whom He said, “This is the resting place. Give rest to the weary,” and “This is the refreshing;” yet they would not hear. 13 Therefore ADONAI’s word will be to them precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, fall backward, be broken, be snared, and be taken.

29: 22 Therefore ADONAI, who redeemed Abraham, says concerning the house of Ya'akov: “Ya'akov shall no longer be ashamed, neither shall his face grow pale. 23 But when he sees his children, the work of my hands, in the middle of him, they will sanctify my name. Yes, they will sanctify the Holy One of Ya'akov, and will stand in awe of the God of Isra'el.

(S) Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah)

1: 1 These are the words of YirmeyahuJeremiah benthe ben HilkiyahuHilkiah, one of the cohenimpriests who were in ‘AnatotAnathoth [MAP] in the land of BinyaminBenjamin. 2 The word of ADONAI[GN] came to him in the days of YoshiyahuJosiah ben Amon, king of Y'hudahY'hudah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. 3 It came also in the days of Y’hoyakimJehoiakim ben YoshiyahuJosiah, king of Y'hudah, to the end of the eleventh year of TzidkiyahuZedekiah ben YoshiyahuJosiah, king of Y'hudah, to the carrying away of YerushalayimJerusalem captive in the fifth month. 4 Now the word of ADONAI came to me, saying,

5 “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.
Before you were born, I sanctified you.
I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

6 Then I said, “Ah, Adonai ADONAI! Hinneh,[GN] I don’t know how to speak; for I am a child.”

7 But ADONAI said to me,

“Don’t say, ‘I am a child;’
for you must go to whomever I send you,
and you must say whatever I command you.
8 Don’t be afraid of them,
for I am with you to rescue you,” said ADONAI.

9 Then ADONAI stretched out his hand and touched my mouth, and ADONAI said to me,

“Hinneh, I have put My words in your mouth.
10 I have today set you over nations and kingdoms,
to uproot and to tear down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant.”

11 Moreover The word of ADONAI came to me, saying, “Yirmeyahu, what do you see?”

I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”

12 Then ADONAI said to me, “You have seen well; for I watch over My word to perform it.”

13 The word of ADONAI came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?”

I said, “I see a boiling cauldron; and it is tipping away from the north.”

14 Then ADONAI said to me, “Out of the north, evil will break out on all the inhabitants of the land. 15 For Hinneh, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north,” says ADONAI.

“They will come, and they will each set his throne
at the entrance of the gates of Yerushalayim,
and against all its walls all around,
and against all the cities of Y'hudah.
16 I will utter My judgments against them
for all their wickedness in abandoning me,
offering incense to other gods,
and worshiping what their own hand have made.
17 “But you, dress for action, stand up and tell them
everything I order you to say.
When you confront them, don’t break down;
or I will break you down in front of them.
18 For today, Hinneh,
I have made you into a fortified city, an iron pillar,
and bronze walls against the whole land —
against the kings of Y'hudah, against its princes,
against its cohenim, and against the people of the land.
19 They will fight against you,
but they will not prevail against you;
for I am with you,” says ADONAI, “to rescue you.”

2: 1 The word of ADONAI word came to me, 2 “Go and shout in the ears of Yerushalayim that this is what ‘ADONAI says:

“I remember your devotion for Me
when you were young;
how, as a bride, you loved Me;
how you followed Me in the wilderness,
through a land that was not sown.
3 Isra'el is set aside for ADONAI,
the first fruits of His harvest.
All who devour him will be held guilty;
evil will come upon them,”’ says ADONAI.”

Basar (Gospel)

The reading from the Gospels is Mattityahu (Matthew) 2:1-12

2: 1Fourteen months after Yeshua was born in Beit-Lechem in the land of Y'hudahJudea, when Herod was king, astronomers from the East came to JerusalemYerushalayim, asking, 2“Where is the newborn King of the JewsY'hudim? For we in the east saw His star, and we have come to worship him.”

3When King Herod heard about them, he was enraged[3a], and so was everyone in Yerushalayim. 4Herod called together all the Kohenim GadolimChief Priests and Torah Teachers of the people, and asked them where the MashiachMessiah would be born. 5They told him, “In Beit-LechemBethlehem in the land of Y'hudah, for this is what the prophet wrote:

6‘You Beit-Lechem, in the land of Y'hudah, are in no way least among the princes of Y'hudah. For out of you shall come forth a ruler, who shall shepherd my people, Yisra'el.’”

7Then Herod summoned the astronomers to meet with him privately, asked them exactly when the star had appeared. 8Then he sent them to Beit-Lechem with these instructions: “Search diligently for the child. When you find Him, let me know so I may also go and worship Him.”

9After listening to the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when they were in the East led them until it came and stood over where the young child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11They went into the house and saw the young child with His mother Miryam, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12Having been warned in a dream that they shouldn’t return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way.

Kepherim (Letters, optional)

The reading from the Kepherim is
P’yilut HaShaliachim (Acts) 3:12-15; 5:27-32; 7:17-36; 22:12-16; 24:14-16
Messianic Jews (Hebrews) 11:23-26

P’yilut HaShaliachim (Acts)

3: 12When Kefa saw it, he responded to the people, “You men of Yisra'el, why are you amazed? Why are you staring at us as if we made him walk by our own power or godliness? 13The God of AvrahamAbraham, Yitz’chakIsaac, and Ya'akovYa'akov, the God of our fathers, has glorified His Servant Yeshua, Whom you had arrested, and Whom you rejected during Pilate’s hearing, when Pilate had decided to release Him. 14But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be released to you. 15And you killed the Author of Life, Whom God has now raised from the dead. And we are witnesses to His resurrection!

5: 27When they had brought them before the Sanhedrin, the Cohen HaGadolHigh Priest challenged them, 28“Didn’t we strictly order you not to teach in this name? Hinneh, you have filled Yerushalayim with your teaching, and you are determined to make us responsible for this Man’s blood!”

29Kefa and the other Sh'liachim answered, “We must obey God rather than men. 30The God of our fathers raised up Yeshua, Whom you had murdered by hanging Him on a tree. 31But God has exalted Him to His right hand as Prince and a Savior, to grant t'shuvahrepentance, turning away from sin and back to God and His torah and forgiveness of sin to Yisra'el. 32We are His witnesses to these things, and so is Ruach HaKodesh, Whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

7: 17“But as the time approached for the fulfillment of the promise God had sworn to Avraham, the numbers of our people in Egypt had greatly increased. 18Then a different king rose to power over Egypt, one who knew nothing about Yosef. 19This king exploited our people and oppressed our fathers, forcing them to throw their babies outside so they would die. 20It was during this time that MosheMoses was born, and he was beautiful iin the sight of God. For three months he was nutured in his father’s house. 21When he was finally thrown outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and reared him as her own son. So 22Moshe was educated in all wisdom of the Egyptians, and became a powerful man in both word and deed. 23When he was forty years old, he decided to visit his brothers,[23] the people of Yisra'elIsra'el. 24When he saw one of them being abused, he came to his defense and avenged the victim by striking down the Egyptian who was abusing him. 25He assumed that his brothers would understandd that God was using him to deliver them, but they didn’t understand.

26“The next day he saw them fighting and urged them to make peace, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why are you mistreating each other?’ 27But the one who was mistreating his brother pushed Moshe aside, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? 28Do you want to kill me, like you killed that Egyptian yesterday?’ 29When he heard this, Moshe fled the country and became an exile in the land of Midyan, [MAP] and had two sons there.

30“After forty years there, an angel appeared to him in the desert near Mount Sinai, as fire in a bush. 31When Moshe saw it he was amazed, and as he came closer to see, the voice of ADONAI came to him: 32‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak, and the God of Ya'akov.’ Trembling with fear, Moshe didn’t dare to look. 33ADONAI said to him, ‘Take off your sandals; the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34I have clearly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them. Now come, I’m going to send you back to Egypt.’

35“This Moshe, the same man they rejected and told ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ — this is the same man that God sent as both a ruler and a redeemer through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36This man led them out, performing miracles and signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea, and for forty years in the wilderness.

22: 12A man named HananyahAnanias, a devout follower of the Torah who was highly regarded by all the Y’hudim living in DammasekDamascus, 13came and stood by me and said, ‘Brother Sha'ul, receive your sight!’ At that very moment I looked up and could see him. 14Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has determined that you should know His will, to see HaTzaddikthe Righteous One, and to hear His voice. 15You will be a witness for Him to everyone of all that you have seen and heard.  16What are you waiting for? Get up, immerse yourself, and have your sins washed away by calling upon the Name of ADONAI.’

24: 14But I will admit this to you; I serve the God of our fathers according to HaDerekthe Way, which they call a sect, believing everything that is in accordance with the Torah and that is written in the Prophets. 15And I have a hope in God, which these men also anticipate, that there will certainly be a resurrection of the dead, both of the righteous and the wicked. 16In this hope I also stive to keep my conscience clear of any offense toward either God or men.

Messianic Jews (Hebrews)

11: 23By faith, Moshe, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king's mitzvah. 24By faith, Moshe, when he had grown up, refused to be called the ben Par`oh's daughter, 25choosing rather to share ill treatment with God’s people, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a time; 26accounting the reproach of Messiah greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

Listen to Va'era read from the CJB

(i) 2 Elohim also told Moshe, “I am ADONAI. 3 I appeared to Avraham, to Yitz’chak, and to Ya‘akov as El ShaddaiGod Almighty; but I did not Reveal Myself[3] to them by My name ADONAI. 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Kena‘an, the land where they as foreigners. 5 Furthermore, I have heard the groaning of the Isra'elites, whom the Egyptians are holding in slavery, and I have remembered My covenant. 6 Therefore tell the Isra'elites, ‘I am ADONAI and I will deliver you from the forced labor of the Egyptians and I free you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as My people and I will be your God. You will know that I am ADONAI your God, Who delivered you from the forced labot of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Avraham, Yitz’chak, and Ya‘akov, and I will give it to you as a possession. I am ADONAI.’”

9 Moshe told this to the Isra'elites, but they didn’t listen to him because of their broken spirit and hard labor.

10 So ADONAI told Moshe, 11 “Go and tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Isra'elites go from his land.”

12 Moshe spoke in the presence of ADONAI “Hinneh,[GN] the Isra'elites haven’t listened to me, so then how will Pharaoh listen to me since I am such a poor speaker?” 13 Then ADONAI spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, and gave them commands concerning both the Isra'elites and Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the Isra'elites out of the land of Egypt.
