D. The Wilderness Tabernacle (25:1-40:38)
1. The Instructions for the Tabernacle (25:1-31:18)
a. The Collection of Materials (25:1-9)
(i) 1 ADONAI[GN] told Moshe, 2 “Tell the prople of Isra'el that to bring Me an offering. You are to bring My offering from everyone whose heart[2] makes him willing. 3 This is the offering which you areto accept from them: gold, silver, bronze; 4 blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, fine linen, goats’ hair; 5 rams’ skins dyed red, sea cow hides,[5] acacia wood, 6 oil for lighting; spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense; 7 onyx stones and other gemstones to be mounted on the ephod and breastplate. 8 Have them make a for Me so I may dwell among them.[8] 9 You must make the tabernacle and design all of its furnishings according to the pattern I will show you.
b. Furnishings for the Tabernacle (25:10-40)
(1) The Ark of the Covenant (25:10-16)
10 “They are to make an ark of acacia wood. It is to be two and a half cubits [45 inches] long, a cubit and a half [27 inches] wide, and a cubit and a half [27 inches] high.[10] 11 Overlay it with pure gold both inside and outside; and make a gold molding around it. 12 Cast four gold rings for it and fasten themto its four feet, two rings on one side and two rings on the other side. 13 Make poles of acacia wood overlaid with gold. 14 Insert the poles into the rings on each side of the ark to carry it. 15 The poles are to be left in the rings of the ark; they must not be removed from it. 16 Place in the ark the Testimony which I will give you.
(2) The Mercy Seat (25:17-22)
(ii) 17 “You are to make a Mercy Seat[17] of pure gold, two and a half cubits [45 inches] long and a cubit and a half [27 inches] wide. 18 And make two k'ruvim[18] of hammered gold at the two ends of the mercy seat. 19 Mold one k'ruv at the one end and another k'ruv at the other end; the k'ruvim on the two ends are to be of one piece with the mercy seat. 20 The k'ruvim are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, facing each other; the faces of the k'ruvim are to be looking toward the mercy seat. 21 Set the mercy seat on top of the ark, and place in the ark the Testimony that I will give you. 22 I will meet with you there above the mercy seat, between the two k'ruvim which are over the ark of the Testimony; I will speak with you from there about everything that I command you regarding the people of Isra'el.
(3) The Table of Showbread (25:23-30)
23 “You are also to make a table of acacia wood two cubits [36 inches] long, one cubit [18 inches] wide, and a cubit and a half [27 inches] high. 24 Overlay it with pure gold and make a gold molding around it. 25 Make a rim around it a handbreadth wide, and put a golden molding on the rim around it. 26 Fashion four gold rings for it, and attach the rings to the four corners at its legs. 27 The rings are to be close to the rim, to serve as holders for the poles to carry the table. 28 Make the poles of acacia wood overlaid with gold, so that the table may be carried with them. 29 You are also to make its dishes, cups, pitchers, and bowls for pouring out drink offerings. Make them of pure gold. 30 Place the Bread of the Presence on the table before Me at all times.
(4) The menorah (25:31-40)
(S: iii) 31 “You are to make a menorah[31] of pure hammered gold. Its base, shaft, cups, buds, and petals are to be made of a single piece. 32 There are to be six branches extendingfrom its sides — three branches of the menorah from one side and three branches from the other side. 33 There are to be three cups shaped like almond blossoms with buds and petals on one branch, three cups on the next branch, and the same for all six branches extending from the menorah . 34 And on the menorah there are to be four cups shaped like almond blossoms with buds and petals, 35 For the branches that extend from the menorah , a calyx[35] must be under the first pair of branches, a calyx under the second pair, and a calyx under the third pair of branches from it. 36 Their calyxes and their branches are to be all of one piece, hammered from pure gold. 37 Make seven lamps and set them on the menorah so that they will immuminate the area in front of it. 38 Its wick trimmers and trays are also to be of pure gold. 39 The menorah and all its utensils are to be made from a talent[39] of pure gold. 40 See that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.

8. Please note that the purpose of the tabernacle was not for sacrifice, but rather so that the very presence of the Almighty might live among them. The sacrifices were necessary for the purification of the sanctuary and of the people, because the Eternal can not be in the presence of anything that is not pure. [BACK]
