c. The Tabernacle and Its Courtyard (26:1-27:21)
(1) Curtains and Frames for the Tabernacle (26:1-37)
(A: iii) 1 “You are to make the tabernacle with ten curtains of finely spun linen, with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, with k’ruvim[GN] skillfully woven into them.[1] 2 The length of each curtain shall be twenty-eight cubits [42 feet],[2] and the width of each curtain four cubits [6 feet]; all are to be the same size. 3 Five of the curtains are to be joined together, and the other five curtains are also to be joined together. 4 You are to make loops of blue [material] on the edge the end curtain in the first set, and do the same on the end of the curtain that is in the second set. 5 Make fifty loops in the end curtain in each set, so that the loops line up opposite each other. 6 Make fifty gold clasps, and fasten the curtains together with the clasps so that the tabernacle will be a single unit.

7 “You are to make curtains of goat hair for a tent over the tabernacle, eleven curtains in all. 8 Each curtain is to be thirty cubits [45 feet] long and four cubits [6 feet] wide, the eleven are to be the same size. 9 Attach five curtains in one set and six curtains in another set, and fold the sixth curtain double at the front of the tent. 10 Make fifty loops on the edge of the outermost curtain in the firsst set and fifty loops on outermost edge of the second set. 11 Make fifty bronze clasps and put the clasps into the loops, joining the tent together so that it is a single unit.[11] 12 The remaining overhanging part of the curtains that make up the tent — the half curtain that remains — is to hang over the back of the tabernacle. 13 The cubit that remains on each side of the remaining length of the curtains of the tent is hang over each side of the tabernacle to cover it.
14 “You are to make a covering for the tent of tanned ram skin and an outer covering of fine leather.
(iv) 15 “You are to make upright planks for the tabernacle out of acacia wood. 16 Each plank is to be ten cubits [15 feet] long and one and a half cubits [two feet, three inches wide] wide. 17 There are to be two tenons[17] on each plank, and the planks are to be joined to one another; this is how you are to make all the planks for the tabernacle. 18 Make twenty planks for the south-facing side tabernacle. 19 Make forty silver socketed bases to go under the twenty planks, two bases under each plank for its two tenons. 20 For the second side of the tabernacle, the north side, make twenty planks 21 with their forty silver bases, two bases under each plank. 22 For the rear side of the tabernacle, the westward side, make six planks. 23 For the corners of the tabernacle in the rear side make two planks. 24 They are to be double from the bottom all the way to the top, joined to a single ring. Do the same for both of them; they are to form the two corners. 25 Thus there will be eight planks with their silver socketed bases, sixteen bases in all, two sockets under one plank, and two sockets under each other plank.
26 “Make crossbars of acacia wood, five crossbars for the planks of the one side of the tabernacle, 27 five crossbars for the planks of the other side of the tabernacle, and five crossbars for the planks at the side of the tabernacle at for the rear side toward the west. 28 The middle crossbar, in the middle of [that is, half-way up] the planks is run from end to end. 29 You are to overlay the planks with gold, and make rings of gold for for the bars to run through. The bars are also to be overlaid with gold.[29] 30 You are to set up the tabernacle according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.
(v) 31 “You are to make a veil of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and finely woven linen, with a design of k’ruvim skillfully worked into it. 32 Hang it with golden hooks from four gold-overlaid acacia wood posts standing four silver bases. 33 Hang the veil from the clasps and place the Ark of the Testimony behind the veil. The veil is to make a separation for you between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. 34 Place the Mercy Seat on the Ark of the Testimony in the Most Holy Place. 35 You are to set the table outside the veil, and the lampstand on the south side of the tabernacle opposite the table. You are to put the table on the north side.
36 “For the entrance to the Tent you are make an embroidered curtain of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely woven linen. 37 For the curtain you are to make five gold-overlayed acacia wood posts with gold hooks, and you are to cast five bases of bronze for them.
1. Alternate translation: “… with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, with a design of k’ruvim worked into them, the work of a skilled workman.” I think this means that a skilled workman was to weave into the white linen curtain a design of cherubim with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn. [BACK]
2. A cubit is the length from the tip of the middle finger to the elbow on a man’s arm, or about 18 inches or 46 centimeters. [BACK]
11. “… a single unit …” is Hebrew אֶחָד (echad). [BACK]
17. A tenon (Heb. יָד, yahd, hand) is a projecting piece of wood made for insertion into a mortise in another piece. This word, occurring in Exodus 26 and 36, is used in the account of the tabernacle to describe the "hand" or yadh by which its 48 boards were kept in place. Each board had two tenons which were mortised into it (Exodus 36:22 margin). These tenons would be made of harder wood than the acacia, so as better to stand the strain of wind and weather. When in use the tenons were sunk into the “sockets,” and allowed of a speedy re-election of the tabernacle at its every move. [BACK]
29. So the Tabernacle was a gold-plated wooden room covered by a waterproof tent. [BACK]
