Parsha[GN] 20:
Tetzaveh (continued)
“You are to order,” Exod. 27:20-30:10
(3) Consecration of the Priests (29:1-46)
(iv) 1 “This is what you are to do to consecrate them to Me to minister to me in the office of cohenpriest: take one young bull and two rams without defect, 2 matzaunleavened bread,[2] matzah cakes mixed with olive oil, and matza wafers anointed with oil, all made from fine wheat flour. 3 Put them all into one basket, and present them in the basket, along with the bull and the two rams. 4 Bring Aharon and his sons to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, and wash them with water. 5 Take the garments, and put on Aharon the tunic, the robe for the ephod, the ephod itself, and the breastplate. Fasten the ephod on him with its belt. 6 Put the turban on his head and attach the holy[6] ornament to the turban. 7 Then take the anointing oil, and anoint him by pouring it on his head. 8 Bring his sons; put tunics on them; 9 wrap sashes around them, Aharon and his sons; and put the headgear their heads. The priesthood shall be theirs by a perpetual statute.[9a] Thus you will consecrate[9b] Aharon and his sons.
10 “Bring the bull to the front of the Tent of Meeting. There Aharon and his sons are to lay their hands on its head. 11 Then slaughter the bull before ADONAI at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 12 Take some of the bull’s blood and put it on the horns of the altar with your finger, then pour the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 13 Take all the fat that covers the entrails, the lobe of the liver, and both kidneys with the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar. 14 But burn the flesh of the bull, its hide, and its dung outside of the camp. It is a sin offering.
15 “Take one of the rams, and Aharon and his sons are to lay their hands on its head. 16 Then you are to slaughter the ram, take its blood, and sprinkle it on all sides of the altar. 17 You are to cut the ram into pieces, wash its entrails and its legs, and put them with its pieces and its head. 18 Then you are to burn the whole ram on the altar: it is a burnt offering to ADONAI a pleasant aroma, an offering made by fire to ADONAI.
(v) 19 “Take the other ram, and Aharon and his sons are to lay their hands on its head. 20 Then slaughter the ram, take some of its blood, and put it on the right earlobes of Aharon and his sons and on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the great toes of their right feet. Sprinkle the remaining blood on all sides of the altar. 21 Then take some of the blood from the altar and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aharon and his garments, and on his sons and on their garments. Then he and and his garments, and his sons and their garments, shall be consecrated to Me.
22 “You are also to take the ram’s fat, the fat tail, the fat that covers the entrails, the lobe of the liver, both kidneys with the fat that is on them, and the right thigh (since it is a ram for consecration), 23 along with one loaf of bread, one cake of oiled bread, and one wafer from the basket of matzah that is before ADONAI. 24 Put all of this in the hands of Aharon and his sons. They are to wave them as a wave offering in the presence of ADONAI. 25 Then take them back and burn them on the altar on top of the burnt offering for a pleasant aroma before ADONAI : it is an offering made by fire to ADONAI.
26 “Take the breast of Aharon’s ram of consecration and wave it for a wave offering before ADONAI. It is to be your portion. 27 Consecrate for Aharon and his sons the breast of the wave offering that is waved and the thigh of the heave offering that is lifted up from ram of consecration. 28 This will belong to Aharon and his sons as their share perpetually due from the people of Isra'el. It will be a contribution from the people of Isra'el from their peace offerings, their contribution to ADONAI.
29 “The holy garments of Aharon shall be for his sons after him; they are to be anointed and consecrated in them. 30 The son who becomes cohen after him, who comes into the Tent of Meeting to serve in the Holy Place, is to wear them for seven days.
31 “Take the ram of consecration and boil its meat in a holy place. 32 Aharon and his sons will eat the ram’s and the bread in the basket at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 33 They are to eat the things with which atonement was made, to consecrate and sanctify them; nobody else may eat these things because they are holy. 34 If any of the meat of the consecration or any of the bread remains until morning, you are burn what remaiins; it is not to be eaten because it is holy.
35 “You are to do to Aharon and his sons everything that I have commanded you. You are to consecrate them for seven days. 36 Every day you are to offer a young bull as a sin offering for atonement. Purify the altar by making atonement for it, and anoint it to consecrate it. 37 For seven days you are make atonement for the altar and consecrate it. Then and the altar will become most holy; whatever touches the altar will be holy.
(vi) 38 “Now this is that which you shall offer on the altar: two year-old lambs every day continually. 39 You are to offer one lamb in the morning, and the other lamb at twilight;[39] 40 with the first lamb offer a tenth of an efah[GN] of fine flour mixed with a quarter of a hin[GN] of oil from pressed olives, and a drink offering of a quarter of a hin of wine. 41 offer the second lamb at evening, the samy way you offer the morning grain and drink offering — it will be a pleasant aroma, an offering made by fire to ADONAI. 42 Throughout your generations this is to be a regular burnt offering at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting before ADONAI. There I will meet with you, to speak there to you. 43 There I will meet with the people of Isra'el, and the place will be sanctified[43] by My glory. 44 I will sanctify the Tent of Meeting and the altar. I will also sanctify Aharon and his sons to serve me as cohenim. 45 I will dwell among the people of Isra'el, and will be their Elohim. 46 They shall know that I am ADONAI their Elohim, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, that I might dwell among them. I am ADONAI their Elohim.
2. Leavening in Scripture is symbolic of sin. These bread sacrifices (grain offerings) must be pure. [BACK]
6. Holy: Hebrew קֹדֶשׁ (ko'-desh), that which is set apart for a special purpose; usually that which is separated to HaShem for His purpose. [BACK]
9a. Many of the descendents of Aharon can often (although not always) be identified today with surnames like Cohen, Cowen, Cowan, Coyne, Cohn, Cahn, Kahn, Kohn, Katz. It should be noted that not all persons with related surnames are kohanim, and not all kohanim have related surnames. Since the priesthood is theirs by a perpetual statute, it stands to reason that when Messiah returns and the Temple service is resumed, they will again serve there as priests. [BACK]
9b. Consecrate, also translated “ordain.” Hebrew יַֽד־ וּמִלֵּאתָ֥ (yaḏ-ū·mil·lê·ṯā) carries with it the idea of filling the hand with power or to fill with abundance. [BACK]
39. Twilight: Hebrew הָעַרְבּיִם (hā·‘ar·bā·yim), evening, twilight, sunset, dusk. Literally, בּין (bên) הָעַרְבּיִם׃ (hā·‘ar·bā·yim), “between the evenings.” [BACK]
43. Sanctified: Hebrew קָדַשׁ (kaw-dash'), to be set apart or consecrated, to become holy. [BACK]
