Parsha 22: vaYak’hel
“He assembled” (continued)
e. Furnishings for the Tabernacle (37:1-29)
(1) The Ark of the Covenant (37:1-5)
1 B’tzal’el made the ark of acacia wood three-and-three-quarters feet long, two-and-a-quarter feet wide and two-and-a-quarter feet high. 2 He overlaid it with pure gold inside and outside, and made a molding of gold for it around it. 3 He cast four gold rings for it at its four feet, two rings on each side. 4 He made poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold. 5 He put the carrying-poles for the ark into the rings on each side of the ark.
(2) The Mercy Seat (37:6-9)
6 He made a mercy seat[6] of pure gold, three-and-three-quarters feet long and two-and-a-quarter feet wide. 7 He made two k’ruvim[GN] of hammered gold at the ends of the mercy seat: 8 one k'ruv at the one end, and one k'ruv at the other end, all made of one piece with the mercy seat at its two ends. 9 The k’ruvim spread out their wings above so that their wings covered the mercy seat, with their faces toward each other and toward the mercy seat.
(3) The Table of Showbread (37:10-16)
10 He made the table of acacia wood, three feet long, eighteen inches wide, and eighteen inches high. 11 He overlaid it with pure gold and put a gold molding around it’s top. 12 He made a rim around it a handbreadth width and put a golden molding around the rim. 13 He cast four gold rings for it and attached the rings at the four corners, near its four legs. 14 The rings for the carrying-poles were set close to the rim. 15 He made the carrying-poles for the table out of acacia wood, and overlaid them with gold. 16 He made the utensils to be placed on the table out of pure gold: its dishes, spoons, bowls, and pitchers.
(4) The Menorah (37:17-24)
(RY:iii; LY:vi) 17 He made the menorahמְנוֹרָה (men-o-raw') lampstand of pure hammered gold. He made it all of one piece: its base, shaft, ornamental cups, buds, and flowers. 18 There were six branches extending from its sides: three branches of the menorah from one side, and three branches of the menorah from the other side. 19 There were three cups shaped like almond blossoms in each branch, each with a bud and a flower, and three cups shaped like almond blossoms in the other branch, with a bud and a flower; the same for all six branches extending from the menorah. 20 On the menorah’s shaft were four cups shaped like almond blossoms with its buds and flowers; 21 and a bud was under the first pair of branches, a bud under the second pair of branches, and a bud under the third pair of branches. 22 The buds and their branches were all of one piece with the menorah, the whole thing was one hammered work of pure gold. 23 He also made its seven lamps, and snuffers, and firepans of pure gold. 24 He made it of a talent of pure gold, with all its utensils.
(5) The Altar of Incense (37:25-29)
25 He made the altar of incense from acacia wood, eighteen inches square and three feet high; its horns were a single unit with it. 26 He overlaid it with pure gold: its top, all around its sides, and its horns; and he put a gold molding around it. 27 He made two gold rings for it under its molding at the two corners on each side, to hold the carrying-poles. 28 He made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold. 29 He made the holy anointing oil and the pure incense of aromatic spices as would an expert perfumer.
6. Mercy seat: Hebrew הַכַּפֹּ֛רֶת (hak·kap·pō·reṯ), literally “the covering.” Stern (CJB) translates it as “the cover.” NLT renders it “the Ark's cover—the place of atonement.” [BACK]
