Listen to vaYak’hel read from the CJB
3. The Construction of the Tabernacle (35:1-40:38)
a. The Sabbath Established (35:1-3)
(i) 1 Moshe assembled the entire congregation of the Isra'elites, and said to them, “These are the things that ADONAI has commanded you to do. 2 ‘Work is to be done on six days, but on the seventh day you are to have a holy Shabbat of solemn rest[2] in honor of ADONAI: whoever does any work on that day is to be put to death. 3 Do not even light a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.’”[3]
b. The Collection of Materials (35:4-29)
4 Moshe also told the entire congregation of the Isra'elites, “This is what ADONAI has commanded: 5 ‘Take an offering to ADONAI from among you. Let everyone whose heart is willing bring it as an offering to ADONAI: gold, silver, and bronze; 6 blue, purple, and scarlet[6] yarn; fine linen, goats hair, 7 rams skins dyed red, sea cow[7] hides, acacia wood, 8 olive oil for the light and spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, 9 onyx stones, and gemstones to be mounted on the ephod and breastplate.
10 “ ‘Let every skilled craftsman among you come and make everything that ADONAI has commanded: 11 the tabernacle with its tent and outer covering, its clasps, its planks, its crossbars, posts, and bases; 12 the ark with its poles, the mercy seat, the veil that schields it; 13 the table with its poles and all its utensils, and the Bread of the Presence; 14 the menorahמְנוֹרָה (men-o-raw') lampstand for the light with its utensils, its lamps, and the oil for the light; 15 and the altar of incense with its poles, the anointing oil, the fragrant incense, the curtain for the doorway at the entrance to the tabernacle; 16 the altar of burnt offering with its bronze grate, its poles, and all its utensils, the basin and its stand; 17 the curtains of the courtyard with its posts and bases, and the curtain for the courtyard gate; 18 the tent pegs for the tabernacle and for the courtyard, with their ropes; 19 the finely woven garments for ministering in the holy place — both the sacred garments for Aharon the cohen and the garments for his sons — to serve as cohenim.’”
20 Then the entire congregation of the Isra'elites departed from the presence of Moshe.
(LY:ii) 21 Everyone whose heart stirred him and whose spirit prompted him came and brought an offering to ADONAI for the work of the Tent of Meeting, for all of its service, and for the sacred garments. 22 So all who had willing hearts, both men and women, came and brought brooches, earrings, signet rings, other golden ornaments, and all kinds of gold jewelry. And they all presented their gold as a wave offering to ADONAI. 23 Everyone who had blue, purple, or scarlet yarn, fine linen, goats’ hair, rams’ skins dyed red, or articles of fine leather brought them. 24 Everyone who could present an offering of silver or bronze brought it as an offering to ADONAI; and everyone who had found acacia wood for any part of the service brought it. 25 Every women who was skilled spun with her hands and brought what she had spun: the blue, purple, or scarlet yarn, and the fine linen. 26 All the skilled women whose hearts stirred them spun the goats’ hair. 27 The leaders brought onyx stones and gemstones to be mounted on the ephod and breastplate, 28 as well as spices and olive oil for the light, for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense. 29 The Isra'elites, all the men and women, whose heart moved them to bring material for all the work which ADONAI had commanded through Moshe brought a freewill offering to ADONAI.
c. B’tzal’el and Oholi’av (35:30-36:9)
(RY:ii; LY:iii) 30 Then Moshe said to the Isra'elites, “Hinneh,[GN] ADONAI has called by name B’tzal’elBezaleel = 'in the shadow (i.e. protection) of God' the son of UriUri = 'fiery' , the son of HurHur = 'hole' , of the tribe of Y’hudahJudah. 31 He has filled him with the Spirit of Elohim, with wisdom, understanding, ability in all kinds of craftsmanship 32 to make skillful works in gold, silver, and bronze, 33 in the cutting of gemstones for mounting, in woodcarving, and all kinds of skilled craftsmanship. 34 He has given both him and Oholi’avAholiab = 'Father's tent', the son of AchisamakhAhisamach = 'my brother is support (has supported)', of the tribe of DanDan = 'a judge', the ability to teach others. 35 He has filled their understanding with skill to do all kinds of workmanship as engravers, designers, and embroiderers in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine linen, and as weavers, as artisans of every kind of skilled craftsmanship and design.
2. Shabbat of solemn rest: Hebrew שַׁבּת שַׁבּתוֹן (shab-bawth' shab-baw-thone'), literally a Shabbat of Shabbat observance. [BACK]
3. It would seem that this commandment
is of special significance, since here Moshe reminds the people of it
prior to telling them ADONAI’s instruction for the collection of
materials for construction of the Tabernacle.
So they were to collect building materials for six days, but under
penalty of death they were not to even collect building materials on
Shabbat. They were not even to light a fire on Shabbat. One must
wonder how this might possibly apply to us today, when all we have
to do is turn a knob on our kitchen range or raise our thermostat a
few degrees. Four thousand years ago when this command was given,
people had to gather and/or chop wood for the fire, and kindling a
fire with flint and steel or rubbing two sticks together was
strenuous work. However, if the fire was already going, I see no
restriction to adding additional fuel to keep it going. How far do
you wish to go to obey this command? That is certainly between you
and HaShem, but if you are a smoker and take this literaly, it might
be beneficial to your health.

6. “When the female of the scarlet worm species was ready to give birth to her young, she would attach her body to the trunk of a tree, fixing herself so firmly and permanently that she would never leave again. The eggs deposited beneath her body were thus protected until the larvae were hatched and able to enter their own life cycle. As the mother died, the crimson fluid stained her body and the surrounding wood. From the dead bodies of such female scarlet worms, the commercial scarlet dyes of antiquity were extracted. What a picture this gives of Christ, dying on the tree, shedding His precious blood that He might 'bring many sons unto glory' (Hebrews 2:10)! He died for us, that we might live through him! Psalm 22:6 describes such a worm and gives us this picture of Christ. (cf. Isaiah 1:18) (from page 73, Biblical Basis for Modern Science, 1985, Baker Book House, by Henry Morris) [BACK]
7. Sea cow: Hebrew תַּחַשׁ (takh'-ash), meaning uncertain. KJV and YLT say badger; HCSB says manatee (the proper name for sea cow; NASB95 says porpoise; ASV and JPS1917 say sealskins; ICB, LEB, NET, and NOG say fine leather. The Hebrew text used for the NASB and others (e.g., CSB, CEB, CJB, CEB, ERV, ESV, GW, GNT, and others) was the third edition of Rudolf Kittel's Biblia Hebraica as well as the Dead Sea Scrolls, in which the word apparently does not appear. (The full publication title for JPS1917 is The Holy Scriptures According to the Masoretic Text: A New Translation with the Aid of Previous Versions and with Constant Consultation of Jewish Authorities.)
