Listen to Parsha B'midbar read from the Complete Jewish Bible
1. Israel at Mount Sinai (1:1-10:10)
a. Israel Numbered and Arranged (1:1-4:49)
i. The Census of Israel’s Warriors (1:1-54)
(i) 1 On the first day of the second month of the second year after they had left the land of Egypt, ADONAI[GN] spoke to Moshe in the Tent of Meeting in the Sinai Desert. He told him, 2 “Take a census of the entire community of the people of Isra'el, by their clans and families, listing the name of every man, one by one. 3 You and Aharon are to register all those who are twenty years old and older by their divisions, everyone who is able to serve in Israel’s army. 4 One man from each clan, the head of each family, must be there with you. 5 These are the names of the men who are to assist you:
From [the Clan of] Re’uven, Elitzur benthe son of Sh’de’ur;
6 From Shim‘on, Shlumi’el ben Tzurishaddai;
7 From Y’hudah, Nachshon ben ‘Amminadav;
8 From Yissakhar, N’tan’el ben Tzu‘ar;
9 From Z’vulun, Eli’av ben Helon.
From Efrayim, Elishama ben ‘Ammihud;
From M’nasheh, Gamli’el ben P’dahtzur.
11 From Binyamin, Avidan ben Gid‘oni;
12 From Dan, Achi‘ezer ben ‘Ammishaddai;
13 From Asher, Pag‘i’el ben ‘Okhran;
14 From Gad, Elyasaf ben De‘u’el;
15 From Naftali, Achira ben ‘Enan.”
16 These men were appointed from the community; they were the leaders of the clans of their fathers, the heads of the thousands[16] of Isra'el. 17 So Moshe and Aharon took these men who were designated by name, 18 and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole community and recorded their ancestry by clans and families, counting one by one the names of those from twenty years old and older. 19 Moshe numbered them in the Sinai Desert, just as ADONAI had ordered him.
(ii) 20 The men twenty years old and over who were subject to military service were recorded by name, family and clan, starting with the descendants of Re’uven, Isra’el’s firstborn. Here are the totals:[20]
| 21 Descendants of Re’uven: | 46,500 |
| 22-23 Descendants of Shim‘on: | 59,300 |
| 45,650 | |
| 74,600 | |
| 54,400 | |
| 57,400 | |
| 40,500 | |
| 32,200 | |
| 35,400 | |
| 62,700 | |
| 41,500 | |
| 53,400 |
44 These were the men who were counted by Moshe and Aharon with the help of the twelve men who were leaders of Isra'el, each one representing his family. 45 So all the Israe'lites twenty years old and older who could serve in Isra'el’s army were registered accouring to their families. 46 And the total of those who were registered numbered 603,550.
47 But the L’vi’imLevites; the clan of Levi were not registered with the clan of their fathers, 48 because ADONAI had told Moshe, 49 “Do not include the clan of Levi when you take a census of the people of Isra'el. 50 Instead, you are to appoint the L’vi’im over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, all its equipment and everything associated with it. They are to carry the Tabernacle and all its equipment; they are to take care of it and set up their camp around it. 51 When the tabernacle is to be moved, it is the L’vi’im who are to take it down and set it up in its new location; anyone else who comes near it must be put to death. 52 The rest of Isra'el are to set up camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own family’s banner. 53 But the L’vi’im are to camp around the Tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath should fall upon the community of the people of Isra'el. The L’vi’im are to be responsible for the Tabernacle of the Testimony.”
54 This is what the people of Isra'el did. They did everything just as ADONAI had commanded Moshe.
16. thousands: Hebrew אַלְפֵ֥י (’al·p̄ê), 1) a thousand 1a) as numeral 2) a thousand, company 2a) as a company of men under one leader, troops. The Amplified Bible translates this verse thus: “These men were the ones called from the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ (ancestors’) tribes; they were the heads of thousands [the highest ranking officers] in Israel.” For both civil and military purposes, God had leaders appointed over Israel by thousands, by fifties, and by tens (Exod. 18:25; cf. Deut. 1:15; 1Chron. 26:26, 27:1; 2Chron. 1:2). [BACK]
20. Verses 20-43 are taken directly from the Complete Jewish Bible, as I find Dr. Stern’s tabular listing much easier to understand than a simple paraphrase of the text would be. [BACK]
