If you do not believe that Genesis chapters 1 thru 11 are literally true, how can you possibly believe that John 3:16 is literally true?

b. Purification of the Camp (5:1-10:10)

i. Ritually Unclean Excluded from the Camp (5:1-4)

(iii) 1 Then ADONAI told Moshe, 2 “Command the people of Isra'el to put out of the camp everyone with a skin disease, everyone who has a bodily discharge, and everyone who is defile by a corpse. 3 You are to put both male and female outside of the camp so that they don’t defile their camp where I dwell among them.”

4 The people of Isra'el did this, and put them outside of the camp. They did as ADONAI instructed Moshe.

ii. Confession and Restitution (5:5-10)

5 And ADONAI told Moshe, 6 “Tell the people of Isra'el: ‘When a man or woman acts unfaithfully against ADONAI by committing any sin against another, that person is guilty 7 and must confess the sin he has committed. He must make full restitution for his guilt amd add a fifth of its value, and give all this to the one he has wronged. 8 But if the man has no relative to whom the restitution may be made for the wrongdoing, the restitution for his guilt belongs to ADONAI and must be made to the cohen, in addition to the ram of atonement, by which the atonement is made for him. 9 Every sacred contrbution the people of Isra'el bring to the cohen shall belong to him. 10 Every man’s sacred gifts are his own, but whatever he gives the cohen, belongs to the cohen.”

iii. The Adultery Test (5:11-31)

(A: iv) 11 ADONAI again told Moshe, 12 “Tell the people of Isra'el, ‘If any man’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him 13 by having sex with another man and it is concealed from her husband and her impurity is undetected (because there is no witness against her and she wasn’t caught in the act), 14 and a feeling of jealousy comes over her husband and he suspects his wife who has defiled herself — or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he is suspects her even though she has not defiled herself — 15 then he is to bring his wife to the cohen. He must also bring for her an offering of a tenth of an efah [two quarts] of barley flour. He is to pour no oil on it nor put frankincense on it, for it is a grain offering for jealousy, a grain offering for remembering, for recalling guilt to mind. 16 The cohen is to bring her forward ahd have her stand in the presence of ADONAI. 17 The cohen is to take some holy water in an clay jar and put some of the dust from the floor of the tabernacle into the water. 18 After the cohen has the woman stand in the presence of ADONAI, he is to let down her hair and place in her hands the grain offering of remembering, which is the grain offering for jealousy. The cohen is to hold in in his hand the jar of bitter water that brings a curse to the guilty. 19 The cohen is then to require the woman to take an oath and tell the woman, “If no other man has had sex with you and you haven’t gone astray and become defiled while under your husband’s authority, may you be immune to this bitter water that brings a curse to the guilty. 20 But if you have gone astray while under your husband’s authority and defiled yourself with a man other than your husband who has had sex with you …” 21 (then the cohen shall have the woman swear under the oath of the curse) “… may ADONAI make you a curse and an oath among your people by making your thigh wither away and your belly swell; 22 and may this water that brings a curse enter your stomach and make your belly swell and your thigh wither away.” And the woman is to say, “Amen, Amen.”

23 “The cohen is to write these curses on a scroll and wash them off into the bitter water. 24 He is make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and it will enter her and cause her bitter suffering. 25 The cohen is to take the grain offering for jealousy from the woman’s hand, wave it before ADONAI, and bring it to the altar. 26 The cohen is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial portion and burn it on the altar; after that he is to make the woman drink the water. 27 When he has made her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, then the water that brings curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her belly will swell and her thigh will wither, and she will becomed accursed among her people. 28 But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, she will be unaffected abd be able to conceive children.

29 “This is the law of jealousy when a wife goes astray and defiles herself while under her husband’s authority, 30 or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a man and he suspects his wife. He is to have the woman stand before ADONAI, and the cohen is to apply to her this entire ritual. 31 The man will be free from guilt, but woman must bear her iniquity.”
