3. Israel in the Wilderness of Pa'ran (13:1-19:22)

a. The Twelve Spies (13:1-15:41)

i. The Spies Explore Canaan (13:1-24)

(i) 1 ADONAI told Moshe, 2 “Send men to spy out the land of Kena‘an, which I am giving to the people of Isra'el. From each of their fathers’ clans, you are send one man who is a leader among them.”

3 Moshe sent them from the Pa'ran Desert according to the commandment of ADONAI. All of them were men who were heads of the people of Isra'el. 4 These were their names:

From the clan of Re’uven, Shammua ben Zaccur.

5 From the clan of Shim‘on, Shaphat ben Hori.

6 From the clan of Y’hudah, Kalev ben Y’funeh.

7 From the clan of Yissakhar, Igal ben Yosef.

8 From the clan of Efrayim, Hoshea ben Nun.

9 From the clan of Binyamin, Palti ben Raphu.

10 From the clan of Z’vulun, Gaddiel ben Sodi.

11 From the clan of Yosef, that i, from the clan of M’nasheh, Gaddi ben Susi.

12 From the clan of Dan, Ammiel ben Gemalli.

13 From the clan of Asher, Sethur ben Michael.

14 From the clan of Naftali, Nahbi ben Vophsi.

15 From the clan of Gad, Geuel ben Machi.

16 These are the names of the men who Moshe sent to spy out the land. Moshe gave Hoshea ben Nun the name Y’hoshua.

17 Moshe sent them to spy out the land of Kena‘an, and said to them, “Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill country. 18 See the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many; 19 and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds; 20 and what the land is, whether it is fertile or poor, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be courageous, and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.

(ii) 21 So they went up, and spied out the land from the Tzin Desert [MAP] to Rehob, [MAP] to the entrance of Hamat. [MAP] 22 They went up by the South, and came to Hevron; Achiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the ‘Anakim,[22] lived there. (Now Hevron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 They came to the Eshkol Valley, and cut off a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a staff between two of them. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs. 24 That place was called the Eshkol Valley, because of the cluster[24] the people of Isra'el cut off from there.

ii. The Report of the Spies (13:25-33)

25 After forety days, they returned from spying out the land, 26 and they went back to Moshe, Aharon, and the whole community of the people of Isra'el in the Pa'ran Desert at Kadesh. They brought back their report for all the community, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 They told [Moshe], “We went into the land where you sent us, and indeed, it flows with milk and honey. Here is some of its fruit! 28 However, the people who are living in the land are strong, and the cities are very large and fortified. We even saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 the ‘Amalekim live in the land of the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Kena‘ani live by the sea and along the the Yarden.”

30 Kalev quited the people before Moshe, and said, “Let’s go up at once and take possession of the land; for we are certainly able to conquer it!”

31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t to go up against these people! They are stronger than we are!” 32 So they gave a bad report the people of Isra'el about the land they had spied out, saying, “The land that we have gone through to spy out is a land that devouers its inhabitants; all the people we saw there are men of great stature. 33 We saw the Nephilim[GN] there, and the 'Anakim who come from the Nephilim. We seemed like grasshoppers in our own sight and we must have seemed the same to them!”

Chapter 14

22. The ‘Anakim were among the so-called “giant” clans, the Nephilim. See also verse 33. [BACK]

24. Hebrew eshkol (אֶשְׁכֹּל) means “cluster.” [BACK]
