3 Those camping on the east side toward the sunrise are to be under the banner of Y’hudah. They are to camp by companies, by clan and leader.

The leader of the clan of Y’hudah is Nachshon benthe son of ‘Amminadav, 4 and his army numbers 74,600.[4]

5 The clan of Yissakhar is to camp next to it. The leader of the of Yissakhar is N’tan’el ben Tzu‘ar, 6 and his army numbers 54,400.

12 “The clan of Shim‘on is to camp next to him. The leader of the clan of Shim‘on is Shlumi’el ben Tzurishaddai, 13 and his army numbers 59,300.

14 “The clan of Gad is next. The leader of the clan of Gad is Elyasaf ben Reuel, 15 and his army numbers 45,650.

16 “The total number of the camp of Re’uven is 151,450. They are to set out second.

17 “Then the Tent of Meeting is to set out with the camp of the L’vi’im, with the other camp ahead and behind. They are to go out in the same order as they camp, each man in his position and under his banner.

18 “Those camping on the west side are to be under the banner of the camp of Efrayim; they are to camp according to their companies.

“The leader of the clan of Efrayim is Elishama ben ‘Ammihud, 19 and his army numbers 40,500.

20 “Next to him is the clan of M’nasheh. The leader of the clan of M’nasheh is Gamli’el ben P’dahtzur, 21 and his army numbers 32,200.

22 “The clan of Binyamin is next. The leader of the clan of Binyamin is P’dahtzur ben Gideoni, 23 and his army numbers 35,400.

24 “The total number of the camp of Efrayim is 108,100. They are to set out third.

25 “Those camping on the north side are to be under the banner of the clan of Dan; they are to camp according to their companies.

The leader of the clan of Dan is Achi‘ezer ben ‘Ammishaddai, 26 and his army numbers 62,700.

27 “Camping next to him is to be the clan of Asher. The leader of the clan of Asher is Pag‘i’e ben ‘Okhran, and 28 his company numbers 41,500.

29 “Next is clan of Naftali. The leader of the clan of Naftali is Achira ben ‘Enan, 30 and his army numbers 53,400.

31 “The total number of the clan of Dan is 157,600. They are to out last under their banners.”

32 These are the ones who were counted from the people of Isra'el by their clans; the total number counted in the camps, company by company, were 603,550. 33 But as ADONAI commanded Moshe, the L’vi’im were not counted with the rest of Isra'el.[33]

34 Thus the people of Isra'el did. According to all that ADONAI commanded Moshe, so they encamped by their banners, and so they set out, everyone by their families, according to their fathers’ houses.

Chapter 3

 4. The stated purpose of the census was to determine the size of Israel’s army. For that reason I have identified the numbers in each of these camps as the size of that clan’s army. [BACK]

33. Remember that this number only includes those over 20 years old who were counted as eligible to serve in Israel’s army, not the entire population of Israel. Nor are those in the “mixed multitude” (Exod. 12:38) even mentioned. [BACK]
