vii. The Boundaries of Canaan (34:1-29)
1 ADONAI told Moshe, 2 “Command the people of Isra'el, and tell them, ‘When you enter the land of Kena‘an it will become your land to pass on as an inheritance, the land of Kena‘an as defined bt these borders.
3 “Your southern portion shall be from the Tzin Desert along by the side of Edom, and your south border shall be from the end of the Salt Sea eastward. 4 Your border shall turn about southward of the ‘Akrabbim Ascent, and pass along to Tzin; and it shall pass southward of Kadesh-Barnea; and it shall go from there to Hatzar-Adar, and pass along to ‘Atzmon. 5 The border shall turn about from ‘Atzmon to the Vadi of Egypt, and it shall end at the sea.
6 “‘For the western border, you shall have the Great Sea [Mediterranean] and its border. This shall be your west border.
7 “‘This shall be your north border: from the Great Sea you shall mark out for yourselves Mount Hor. 8 From Mount Hor you shall mark out to the entrance of Hamat; and the border shall pass by Tz’dad. 9 Then the border shall go to Zifron, and it shall end at Hatzar-‘Einan. This shall be your north border.
10 “‘You shall mark out your east border from Hatzar-‘Einan to Sh’fam. 11 The border shall go down from Sh’fam to Rivlah, on the east side of ‘Ayin. The border shall go down, and shall reach to the side of the Lake Kinneret eastward. 12 The border shall go down to the Yarden River, and end at the Salt Sea. This will be the borders of your land.’”
13 Moshe commanded the people of Isra'el, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which ADONAI has commanded to give to the nine clans, and to the half-clan; 14 for the clan of the descendants of Re’uven according to their fathers’ houses, the clan of the descendants of Gad according to their fathers’ houses, and the half-clan of M’nasheh have received their inheritance. 15 The two clans and the half-clan have received their inheritance beyond the Yarden at Yericho eastward, toward the sunrise.”
(RY: vi; LY: iv) 16 ADONAI told Moshe, 17 “These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for inheritance: El‘azar the cohen, and Y’hoshua ben Nun. 18 You are to appoint one leader from each clan to take possession of the land. 19 The names of these men are:
from the clan of Y’hudah, Kalev ben Y’funeh;
20 from the clan of the descendants of Shim‘on, Sh’mu’el ben ‘Ammihud;
21 from the clan of Binyamin, Elidad ben Kislon;
22 from the clan of the descendants of Dan a leader, Buki ben Yogli;
23 from the descendants of Yosef:
of the clan of the descendants of M’nasheh a leader, Hani’el ben Efod;
24 from the clan of the descendants of Efrayim a leader, Kemuel ben Shiphtan;
25 from the clan of the descendants of Z’vulun a leader, Elitzafan ben Parnakh;
26 from the clan of the descendants of Yissakhar a leader, Palti’el ben 'Azan;
27 from the clan of the descendants of Asher a leader, Achihud ben Shlomi;
28 from the clan of the descendants of Naftali a leader, P’dah’el ben ‘Ammihud.”
29 These are they whom ADONAI commanded to divide the inheritance to the people of Isra'el in the land of Kena‘an.
