Haftarah Pinchas is M’lakhim Alef (1 Kings) 18:46–19:21
Listen to it read from the Complete Jewish Bible

18: 46 ADONAI’s hand was on Eliyahu; and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran before Ach’av to the entrance of Yizre‘el.

19: 1 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I don’t make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time!”

3 When he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. 4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. Then he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough. Now, O ADONAI, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.”

5 He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat!”

6 He looked, and hinneh, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 The Angel of ADONAI came again the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.”

8 He arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, God’s Mountain. 9 He came to a cave there, and camped there; and hinneh, the Word of ADONAI came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

10 He said, “I have been very jealous for ADONAI, the God of Hosts; for the children of Isra'el have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

11 He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before ADONAI.”

Hinneh, ADONAI passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before ADONAI; but ADONAI was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake; but ADONAI was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake a fire passed; but ADONAI was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a still small voice. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

14 He said, “I have been very jealous for ADONAI, the God of Hosts; for the children of Isra'el have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

15 ADONAI said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. 16 Anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Isra'el; and anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place. 17 He who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and he who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill. 18 Yet I reserved seven thousand in Isra'el, all the knees of which have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him.”

19 So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. Elijah went over to him and put his mantle on him. 20 Elisha left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, “Let me please kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.”

He said to him, “Go back again; for what have I done to you?”

21 He returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, killed them, and boiled their meat with the oxen’s equipment, and gave to the people; and they ate. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and served him.

Basar (Gospel)

Mattityahu (Matthew) 26:1–30

1When Yeshua had finished saying all these things, He said to his disciplestalmidim, 2You know that PesachPassover is coming in two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”

3Meanwhile, the leeading priestscohenim, the Scribes, Torah teachersSofrim, and the zakenimelders of the people were gathered together in the palace of KayafaCaiaphas, the High PriestCohen HaGadol. 4They made plans to arrest Yeshua by stealth and kill him. 5“But,” they said, “not during the feast, or the people might riot.”

6When Yeshua was in Beit-AnyahBethany, in the home of Shim`onSimon, who had been cured of tzara'at, 7a woman came to Him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, and while he sat eating, she poured it over His head. 8When His disciplestalmidim saw this, they were indignant and said, “Why this waste? 9This perfume could have been sold for a lot of money which could have been given to the poor.”

10However, Yeshua was aware of this and said to them, Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a mitzvahgood work, good deed for me. 11You will always have the poor with you; but you won’t always have me. 12In pouring this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13I’m telling you the truth, whenever this Good News is proclaimed anywhere in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of as a memorial to her.”

14Then one of the twelve, Y'hudah the SicariusJudas Iscariot, [GN] went to the leading priestscohenim 15and asked them, “What are you willing to pay me to deliver Him to you?” They weighed out thirty pieces of silver for him. 16From that time on he sought an opportunity to betray Him.

17Now, on the first day of at the beginning of the preparation for the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciplestalmidim came to Yeshua and asked “Where do You want us to prepare You to eat the Pesach?”

18He said, Go into the city and find a certain man and tell him that the Rabbi says, ‘My time is near. I will keep the Passover with My talmidim at your house.’”

19The talmidim did as Yeshua had instructed them, and they prepared the Seder.

20That evening He was reclining at the table with the twelve talmidim. 21As they were eating, He said, I’m telling you truthfully that one of you is going to betray Me.”

22They became extremely upset, and each began to ask Him, “It isn’t me, is it, Lord?”

23He answered, The one who dipped his matza in the dish with Me is the one who will betray Me. 24The Son of Man will die just as the TanakhHebrew Bible says He will, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if he had never been born.”

25Y'hudah, who betrayed him, answered, “It isn’t me, is it, Rabbi?”

He said to him, You said it!”

26As they were eating, Yeshua took bread, said the ha-motzi, and broke it. He gave it to the talmidim, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.”

27He took the cup, said the ha-gafen, and gave it to them, saying, All of you drink it, 28for this is My blood of the New Covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins.[28b] But I tell you that I will not drink of this fruit of the vine until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”

30When they had sung the Hallel, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

5: 6 Your boasting is not good.[6a] Don’t you know that a little yeast[6b] leavens the whole lump? 7 Purge out the old yeast, that you may be a new lump, even as you are unleavened. For indeed Messiah, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place. 8 Therefore let’s keep the feast, not with old yeast, neither with the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
