If you do not believe that Genesis chapters 1 thru 11 are literally true, how can you possibly believe that John 3:16 is literally true?

c. The Red Heifer (19:1-22)

i. The Offering of the Red Heifer (19:1-10)

(1) 1 ADONAI said to Moshe and Aharon, 2 “This is the regulation from the Torah which ADONAI has commanded. Tell the people of Isra'el to bring you a red heifer without fault or defect, which was never borne a yoke. 3 You are to give her to El‘azar the cohen; it is to be brought outside of the camp and slaughtered in front of him. 4 El‘azar the cohen is to take some of her blood with his finger and sprinkle this blood toward the front of the Tent of Meeting seven times. 5 The heifer is to be burned to ashes in his presence — her skin, meat, blood, and her dung is to be burned to ashes. 6 Then the cohen is to take cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet yarn and throw them onto the heifer as it is burning up. 7 Then the cohen is to wash his clothes and bathe himself in water, and afterward he may re-enter the camp; but the cohen shall be [ceremonially] unclean until evening. 8 The person burns her is wash his clothes and bathe himself in water, but he will remain [ceremonially] unclean until evening.

9 “A man who is [ceremonially] clean is to collect the ashes of the heifer and store them outside of the camp in a [ceremonially] clean place.[9] They are to be kept for the community of the people of Isra'el to prepare water for purification from sin. 10 The one who collected the ashes of the heifer is to wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. For both the people of Isra'el and for the foreigner who lives among them, this is to be a permanent regulation.[10]

ii. The Water of Purification (19:11-22)

11 “Anyone who touches any corpse will be unclean for seven days. 12 He must purify himself with [this] water on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean. But if he doesn’t purify himself on the third day, then on the seventh day he will not be clean. 13 Whoever touches a corpse, the body of a man who has died, and doesn’t purify himself, defiles ADONAI’s Tabernacle; and that soul is to be cut off from Isra'el, because the water for purification has not been sprinkled on him, he shall be unclean. His uncleanness remains on him.

14 “This is the law when a man dies in a tent: everyone who comes into the tent, and everyone who is already in the tent, will be for unclean seven days. 15 Every open vessel that has no lid fastened on it is unclean.

16 “Anyone in the open field who touches someone who has been slain with a sword or died of natural causes, or any human bone or any grave, will be unclean seven days.[16]

17 “For the [purification of] the unclean person, take some of the ashes of the burnt purification offering, put them in a jar, and pour fresh running water over them.

(LY:ii) 18 Then a clean person is to take some hyssop, dip it in the water, and sprinkle it on the tent, on all the furnishings and on the people who were there. He is also to sprinkle the one who the bone, the slain, or the corpse, or the grave. 19 The clean person is to sprinkle the unclean person again on the third and on the seventh days. After he purifies the unclean person on the seventh day, [the one being cleansed] is to wash his clothes and bathe himself in water; that evening he will be be clean. 20 But if a person who is unclean does not purify himself, he must be cut off from the assembly, because he has defiled the sanctuary of ADONAI. The water of purification has not been sprinkled on him; he is unclean. 21 This is to be It shall be a permanent statute for the people: the one who sprinkles the water of purification must wash his clothes, and whoever touches the water of purification will be unclean until evening.

22 “Anything the unclean person touches will become unclean, and anyone who touches it will be unclean until evening.”

Chapter 20

 9. I think you get the idea. When the text is talking about “clean” and “unclean,” it is talking about things that are ceremonially or ritually clean” or “unclean.” [BACK]

10. Once again we see that the Torah applies not only to the people of Israel, but also to the foreigner who dwells among (identifies with) Israel. If you identifiy with Israel’s Messiah, you identify with Israel. The two are inseparable. [BACK]

16. During the plagues that decimated the population of Europe during the Dark Ages, because the Jews carefull observed the Torah in matters of clean and unclean, they had a far lower death rate than the general popluation. Because of that, they were often accused of witchcraft. [BACK]
