3. Final Preparations to Enter the Promised Land (33:1-36:13)
v. Summary of the Wilderness Journeys (33:1-49)
1 These are the stages of the journey of the people of Isra'el as they left the land of Egypt divided into groups under the leadership of Moshe and Aharon. 2 As ADONAI had commanded, Moshe recoreded the stages of their journey. These are the stages listed by their starting points.
3 They traveled from Ram’ses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the next day after the Pesach, the people of Isra'el went out with a high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians, 4 while the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn, whom ADONAI had struck among them. ADONAI also executed judgments on their gods. 5 The people of Isra'el traveled from Ram’ses, and encamped in Sukkot.
6 They traveled from Sukkot, and encamped in Etam, which is in the edge of the wilderness. 7 They traveled from Etam, and turned back to P’nei-Hachirot, which is before Ba‘al-Tz’fon, and they encamped before Migdol. 8 They traveled from before P’nei-Hachirot, and crossed through the middle of the sea into the wilderness. They went three days’ journey in the Etam Desert, and encamped in Marah. 9 They traveled from Marah, and came to Eilim. In Eilim, there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they encamped there. 10 They traveled from Eilim, and encamped by the Sea of Suf.
(LY: ii) 11 They traveled from the Sea of Suf, and encamped in the Seen Desert. 12 They traveled from the Seen Desert, and encamped in Dofkah. 13 They traveled from Dofkah, and encamped in Alush. 14 They traveled from Alush, and encamped in Refidim, where there was no water for the people to drink. 15 They traveled from Refidim, and encamped in the Sinai Desert. 16 They traveled from the Sinai Desert, and encamped in Kivrot-HaTa’avah. 17 They traveled from Kivrot-HaTa’avah, and encamped in Hatzerot. 18 They traveled from Hatzerot, and encamped in Ritmah. 19 They traveled from Ritmah, and encamped in Rimmon-Peretz. 20 They traveled from Rimmon-Peretz, and encamped in Livnah. 21 They traveled from Livnah, and encamped in Rissah. 22 They traveled from Rissah, and encamped in K’helah. 23 They traveled from K’helah, and encamped on Mount Shefer. 24 They traveled from Mount Shefer, and encamped in Haradah. 25 They traveled from Haradah, and encamped in Mak’helot. 26 They traveled from Mak’helot, and encamped in Tachat. 27 They traveled from Tachat, and encamped in Terach. 28 They traveled from Terach, and encamped in Mitkah. 29 They traveled from Mitkah, and encamped in HaShmonah. 30 They traveled from HaShmonah, and encamped in Moserot. 31 They traveled from Moserot, and encamped in B’nei-Ya‘akan. 32 They traveled from B’nei-Ya‘akan, and encamped in Hor-HaGidgad. 33 They traveled from Hor-HaGidgad, and encamped in Yotvatah. 34 They traveled from Yotvatah, and encamped in Avronah. 35 They traveled from Avronah, and encamped in ‘Etzyon-Gever. 36 They traveled from ‘Etzyon-Gever, and encamped at Kadesh in the Tzin Desert.
37 They traveled from Kadesh, and encamped on Mount Hor, in the edge of the land of Edom. 38 At the command of ADONAI, Aharon the cohen went up into Mount Hor and died there, in the fortieth year after the people of Isra'el had come out of the land of Egypt, in the fifth month, on the first day of the month. 39 Aharon was 120-three years old when he died on Mount Hor. 40 The Kena‘ani king of ‘Arad, who lived in the South in the land of Kena‘an, heard of the coming of the people of Isra'el. 41 They traveled from Mount Hor, and encamped in Tzalmonah.
42 They traveled from Tzalmonah, and encamped in Punon. 43 They traveled from Punon, and encamped in Ovot. 44 They traveled from Ovot, and encamped in ‘Iyei-Ha‘Avarim, in the border of Mo’av. 45 They traveled from 'Iyim, and encamped in Divon-Gad. 46 They traveled from Divon-Gad, and encamped in ‘Almon-Divlatayim. 47 They traveled from ‘Almon-Divlatayim, and encamped in the ‘Avarim Range, before N’vo. 48 They traveled from the ‘Avarim Range, and encamped in the plains of Mo’av by the Yarden, across from at Yericho. 49 Their camp by the Yarden stretched from Beit-HaYeshimot all the way to Avel-HaSheetim in the plains of Mo’av.
vi. Instructions for Occupying Canaan (33:50-56)
(RY: v; LY: iii) 50 ADONAI spoke to Moshe in the plains of Mo’av by the Yarden, across from Yericho, 51 He said, “Tell the people of Isra'el, ‘When you cross the Yarden into the land of Kena‘an, 52 you are to drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their stone idols, destroy all their molten images, and demolish all their high places. 53 You are to take possession of the land, and live in it; for I have given the land to you to possess it. 54 You shall inherit the land by lot according to your families; to the larger groups you shall give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller you shall give a smaller inheritance. Wherever the lot falls to any man, that shall be his. You shall inherit according to the clans of your fathers.
55 “But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those you let remain of them will be like pricks in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will harass you in the land in which you dwell. 56 It shall happen that as I thought to do to them, so I will do to you.”
